The Winthrop Eagles and the Radford Highlanders meet in Big South conference college basketball action from the Donald N. Dedmon Center on Monday night.
The Winthrop Eagles will look to add to their current seven-game winning streak after a 116-95 win over Hampton last time out. D.J. Burns led the Eagles with 22 points on 9 of 12 shooting with 6 rebounds while Josh Ferguson added 20 points on 9 of 17 shooting with 13 rebounds for the double-double. Chandler Vaudrin added 15 points along with a team-high 7 assists and a pair of steals while Hunter Hale chipped in 13 points with 5 assists. Russell Jones added 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting with 3 threes and Charles Falden added 11 points to cap off the group of double-digit scorers for the Eagles in the winning effort. Ferguson leads Winthrop in scoring and rebounding with 12.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while Vaudrin leads the Eagles in assists with 6.1 assists per game this season. As a team, Winthrop is averaging 82.7 points per game on 46.1% shooting from the field, 34.9% from behind the arc and 62.1% from the foul line this season.
The Radford Highlanders will also look to add to their current seven-game winning streak after a 75-64 win over Presbyterian in their last outing. Carlik Jones led the Highlanders with 20 points on 8 of 14 shooting with a team-high 7 rebounds and 6 assists while Donald Hicks came right behind with 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting with 5 threes and 7 rebounds of his own. Travis Fields Jr. added 11 points with a team-high 5 assists to finish off the trio of double-digit scorers for Radford in the win. Jones leads Radford in scoring and assists with 18.9 points and 5.4 assists per game while Devine Eke leads the Highlanders in rebounding with 6.6 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Radford is averaging 70.2 points per game on 45.2% shooting from the field, 35.5% from 3-point range and 65.5% from the foul line this season.
Winthrop is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 games following a win. Radford is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 6-20-1 ATS in their last 27 games following a win while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record.
I am tempted by Radford as a home dog during their current winning streak as well as the Highlanders outscoring teams by 15.8 points per game at home and holding their opposition to just 58.8 points per game. However, all Winthrop has done on the road this season is cover, and the Eagles have been dominant in conference play so far this season, outscoring their opposition by 17.2 points per game and averaging 94.4 points per game. I think this is a game that Winthrop can use to make a statement to the rest of the Big South so I’ll lay the points with the Eagles in this spot.
