This year the Cowboys opened the season with a couple of wins over Akron and Northern Iowa. Wyoming then took three straight losses versus Utah, Colorado and UNLV before another win over San Jose State. The next game was another loss however, this time 24-21 on the road versus Air Force. In that one the Cowboys’ defense coughed up 330 rushing yards, 5.7 yards per play and 19 first downs with zero takeaways. Wyoming’s offense managed 409 yards on the other side with 6.2 yards per play and 25 first downs in the road defeat.
In last weekend’s primetime matchup with Colorado State, the Cowboys jumped out to a 21-0 edge by halftime. Wyoming added another touchdown in the third quarter along the way to a shutout win at home 28-0. QB Kaden Anderson had a 16-of-24 line for 154 yards and two scores while leading rusher Sam Scott posted three totes for 68 yards and a TD of his own. Tops in receiving during the victory was Chris Durr with 67 yards and a score on seven grabs.
Over on the Aztecs’ side, they took a 36-13 loss on the road versus Washington State but otherwise won five of their first six outings. The victories in that time came courtesy of Stony Brook, Cal, Northern Illinois, Colorado State and Nevada. In the win over the Wolf Pack on October 11, SDSU held the opposition to just 254 total yards, 77 rush yards, 15 first downs and 4-of-15 on third-down tries along with two interceptions. The offense gained 409 total yards in the win but also went just 3-of-10 on third downs.
Matched up against Fresno State last weekend, the Aztecs carried a modest 13-0 edge into the final quarter. After 10 more points from there, San Diego State had a shutout win on the road 23-0. QB Jayden Denegal was 11-of-19 for 124 yards and an interception, and Lucky Sutton had 21 carries for 131 yards and a TD as the team’s leading rusher. Topping the receivers was Byron Cardwell with two catches for 59 yards in the victory effort.

Wyoming ranks T11th among FBS teams for red zone percentage against this season (72.7).

I’ll go with San Diego State. The Aztecs defense had a good day last weekend versus a pretty decent Fresno State team, posting just 14 first downs, 3.5 yards per play and 5-of-16 on third-down tries allowed alongside a couple of interceptions. The offense was tepid but effective on 208 rush yards but the two turnovers and 4-of-12 on third-down tries were a cause for concern in the long run. In any case, San Diego State has now won five straight games and scored 23 or more points in each of the last three.
As for Wyoming, they fared pretty well in their last outing versus a struggling Colorado State team, notching three takeaways and 4-of-13 allowed on third downs defensively. The Cowboys have 21 or more points in three straight games themselves so a high total here wouldn’t be too surprising.
