As we conclude, we will tie it all together with a summary that produces a sensible pick for a favorable betting outcome in this game.

VMI Keydets Betting Preview

The Keydets limped through the 2025 season with a forgettable run. VMI ended up going just 1-11 overall with a futile 0-8 stretch in the Southern Conference. With that effort the Keydets landed firmly in the basement of the standings, a game behind a 1-7 Samford squad. VMI got their lone win over Ferrum in game two then hit a rough 10-game losing streak to close things out on the year.

VMI opened up their season with a matchup versus Idaho State on August 29. In that one the Keydets gave up 28 points in the third quarter and didn’t score themselves until the final frame in a 38-10 loss. JoJo Crump went 3-of-7 for 16 yards and Chandler Wilson led the rush on 62 yards from seven carries.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they didn’t have a great season in 2025 either. The Hokies logged a rough 3-9 overall run with a 2-6 stretch in Atlantic Coast Conference games. That result would put Virginia Tech ahead of only North Carolina, Boston College and Syracuse in the standings. The Hokies won three of five games in the middle of the season, then closed on a four-game losing streak (three of which were against ranked teams).

This season the Hokies have a new coaching staff, helmed by head coach James Franklin. He’s got some good pieces to work with, including running back Marcellous Hawkins, who led the team on 749 rush yards last year. Transfers like RB Bill Davis (Louisiana) and Quaan Brown (Duke) should give the offense some potency.

VMI vs Virginia Tech Prediction

I’ll stick with Virginia Tech but realistically I’m not touching it; the line is crazy thick. The Hokies are pegged for a big turnaround this year, and a lot of people are predicting seven wins or so. A bowl berth this season would be a great accomplishment, but there are some potential landmines on the schedule. After a couple of winnable home games to start (VMI and Old Dominion), Virginia Tech plays five of the next seven games on the road. Forming some early chemistry will be crucial for the Hokies this season.

As for VMI, they gave up 454 yards (366 passing) and 7.1 yards per play in their loss to Idaho State but it was really the offense that couldn’t get anything going. The Keydets had just 11 passing yards, 3.9 yards per play and 10 first downs—not to mention the 3-of-16 on third-down tries. I don’t think VMI will get anywhere remotely close here.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies -55.5
