A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the Villanova vs Penn State game
Last year Villanova had a pretty decent campaign in head coach Mark Ferrante’s eighth season. The Wildcats would end up going 10-4 overall with a 6-2 run in the Coastal Athletic Association. That result would put Villanova in third place among the standings, behind Richmond and Rhode Island. After a 3-1 stretch over the final four games of the regular season, the Wildcats dispatched Eastern Kentucky in the NCAA Division I First Round. The Second Round was a loss however, as Villanova fell 13-6 versus Incarnate Word to put an end to their season.
The Wildcats have just one game in the books so far: last weekend’s matchup versus Colgate. In that one the Wildcats scored 14 points in the first half and 10 in the third quarter on the way to a tense win 24-17. QB Pat McQuaide was 18-of-28 for 299 yards and one score while also notching a rush TD. David Avi had 49 yards rushing on 15 carries.
Over on the Penn State side, they kicked things off this year with a matchup versus Nevada. The Nittany Lions scored double-digit points in each of the first three quarters in that one, eventually taking a smooth blowout win 46-11. QB Drew Allar was 22-of-26 for 217 yards and a passing score while Kaytron Allen led the rush on eight carries for 43 yards and a TD. Nick Singleton had two rush scores among his eight totes for 19 yards as well. Tops in receiving was Kyron Hudson with six grabs for 89 yards and a score. Trebor Pena had a nice day as well with seven catches for 74 yards.
Matched up against Florida International in their second outing of the season, the Nittany Lions didn’t have much trouble either. Penn State held a modest 10-0 edge at the break but eventually won 34-0 in the end. Allar was 19-of-33 for 200 yards and two touchdowns this time, while Allen carried 16 times for 144 yards and a score. Singleton had 13 totes for 76 yards and a TD of his own. Topping the receivers was Devonte Ross with three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown, and Luke Reynolds had seven grabs for 58 yards total.
Heading into Week 3, Ryan Barker ranks T2nd amongst FBS players for made field goals (6) this season.
Penn State ranks T1st among FBS teams for red zone percentage this season (100.0).
Penn State ranks T5th among FBS teams for red zone percentage against this season (50.0).
I’ll likely just stay with Penn State. I’m probably not touching this one though—mostly due to what should be a thick line pretty much everywhere. It’s just not really worth messing around with. That said, the Nittany Lions have a couple of good efforts in the books (versus overmatched opponents) so far. In the Nevada game, Penn State put up 438 total yards (303 passing), 6.2 yards per play and 25 first downs. On defense the Lions surrendered just 203 total yards (125 passing), 3.9 yards per play and 13 first downs while collecting a trio of takeaways.
In game two Penn State held FIU to just 290 yards total (149 passing), 4.0 yards per play and 14 first downs with two takeaways. The offense was good in that one with 409 yards (209 rushing) and 20 first downs, but Penn State went just 3-of-12 on third downs. The Lions have a few kinks to work out, but this should be another big win.
