UTEP’s 2025 season wasn’t much to write home about. The Miners limped to a rough 2-10 overall record and posted an ugly 1-7 run in their last season as a member of Conference USA. That run put UTEP firmly in last place among the standings, tied with Sam Houston record-wise. Their only two wins came versus the Bearkats and TN-Martin. Otherwise it was a fruitless run.

Over on the Oklahoma side, they had a pretty darn good run last year but their postseason stretch ended quickly. The Sooners powered out a 10-3 overall record and a 6-2 run in a very tricky SEC. Oklahoma finished behind Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss and Texas A&M in the standings, earning a No. 13 ranking along the way. In their First Round CFP game versus Alabama however, the Sooners lost 34-24.

This will be head coach Brent Venables’ fifth season in the role. He’ll get QB John Mateer back in the fold, and the team will need all the help they can get in navigating one of the toughest schedules in the country. Oklahoma should have a pretty strong defense as well, featuring names like David Stone, Jayden Jackson and Taylor Wein. That unit finished sixth in the country in total defense last season; we’ll see if they can maintain that run in 2026.

I’ll just stay with Oklahoma. Probably not touching this one, though. UTEP is a good opponent for the Sooners to start off with, and Oklahoma shouldn’t have too many issues rolling to a win here. It’ll be the first step in a season that has a potential ceiling of a national championship. Things could very easily go sideways though, as it would only take a couple of losses to derail the Sooners’ title dreams. That’s a realistic scenario with a schedule that includes games at Michigan and Georgia alongside home matchups versus Texas and Ole Miss.

As for UTEP, they should be able to take a step forward this season. The Miners have a few tough games on the schedule themselves though, including this opener and a visit from Oregon State in late September. Still, if the team plays as well as it should on paper, we’ll see a handful of wins from UTEP this year.
