UTEP Miners Betting Preview

The Miners lost to Utah State to open up this season then took out TN-Martin in game two. The next four were all losses as UTEP fell to Texas, LA-Monroe, LA Tech and Liberty. The Miners were able to take out Sam Houston but then lost to Kennesaw State on October 28. In that one UTEP gave up points in every quarter on the way to a 33-20 finish. The Miners gained 295 yards with 4.0 yards per play and went just 2-of-16 on third-down tries in the road defeat.

In their latest matchup on Saturday versus Jacksonville State, UTEP faced a 20-13 deficit at the break. Despite scoring in every quarter, the Miners gave up 10 points in three different frames for a 30-27 loss at home. QB Skyler Locklear had a 16-of-32 line for 244 yards, two scores and a pick while also leading the rush on 17 carries for 82 yards and two more touchdowns. Tops in receiving was Wondame Davis with five grabs for 166 yards and a touchdown of his own in the home defeat.

Missouri State Bears Betting Preview

Over on the Bears’ side, they kicked things off on a 2-2 run with losses to USC and SMU amid wins over Marshall and TN-Martin. Missouri would go 3-1 over the next four, losing to Western Kentucky by five ahead of wins versus Middle Tennessee, New Mexico State and FIU in that time. In the win over the Panthers, Missouri State put up a touchdown in each quarter in a 27-21 victory. The Bears gained 369 yards on offense with 18 first downs and went 8-of-16 on third-down tries. Missouri State’s defense got a couple of fumble recoveries in the win as well.

Matched up against Liberty in a road game Saturday, the Bears faced a 10-0 deficit at the break. Missouri State stormed back on a 21-7 run the rest of the way, taking the win 21-17 in dramatic fashion. QB Jacob Clark finished with a 20-of-33 line for 286 yards and a pair of scores while lead rusher Shomari Lawrence had 13 totes for 48 yards. Tristian Gardner led the receivers in the win on 80 yards and a score from five catches.

UTEP vs Missouri State Prediction

I’ll stick with the Bears. Missouri State started slowly in their latest win over Liberty this past weekend but finished with a flourish. The Bears ended up going just 5-of-11 on third downs but also managed 20 first downs with 332 yards total. Missouri State gave up 398 yards on the other side—including 202 rush yards—but also had a couple of takeaways on defense which were key in the victory. Oddly enough, it was the Bears’ lowest points total since hanging just 10 in a loss to SMU on September 13.

As for the Miners, they had a bad time on third downs (2-of-13) in their tight home loss to Jacksonville State over the weekend and couldn’t quite pull it off. UTEP has given up a total of 63 combined points in their last two games—both losses. That bodes well for Missouri State’s offense this weekend.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Missouri State Bears -4.5
