The Red Raiders came out of the gate strong this year, recording a series of dominant wins. After an opener victory 67-7 versus AR-Pine Bluff, Texas Tech took out Kent State, Oregon State and Utah in the next three games. Game five was another victory, this time 35-11 on the road versus Houston. Texas Tech managed 552 yards, 27 first downs and 9-of-18 on third-down tries in that one. The defense was great as well, holding Houston to just 12 first downs and 1-of-12 on third-down conversions along with three takeaways.
Last weekend against Kansas, the Red Raiders were up 18-0 after one quarter but nearly gave their lead away with 17 points allowed in the second. Texas Tech recovered after the break however, eventually winning decisively 42-17. Will Hammond threw for just 42 yards on 7-of-16 passing with an interception but also scored twice on the ground. Cameron Dickey carried 21 times for 263 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Caleb Douglas caught six balls for 55 yards in the win.
Over on the Arizona State side, they rolled past Northern Arizona in their opener then fell on the road versus Mississippi State 24-20. The Sun Devils recovered with wins over Texas State, Baylor and TCU in the next three outings, though. In the victory over the Horned Frogs, Arizona State put up 498 yards on offense—with 207 of those coming on the ground—but went just 5-of-16 on third-down tries. The defense got a trio of takeaways during the game, however.
Matched up against Utah last weekend, the Sun Devils were in trouble from the very beginning. Arizona State gave up points in every quarter (including 14 in both the second and third) and only found the end zone once in a 42-10 blowout road loss. QB Jeff Sims finished 18-of-38 for 124 yards while leading rusher Raleek Brown carried 14 times for 67 yards. Jordyn Tyson scored the lone TD while also leading the receivers on eight catches for 40 yards in the defeat.
Jordyn Tyson has recorded 7+ receptions in three consecutive games – equal-longest streak in the FBS, heading into Week 8.
David Bailey has recorded at least one sack in five consecutive games – longest streak in the FBS, heading into Week 8.
Arizona State ranks 121st among FBS teams for 3rd down conversion percentage this season (32.2).
Arizona State ranks T113th among FBS teams for Q1 points per game this season (3.8).
Texas Tech has recorded the most home wins by a margin of 20+ points of any FBS team this season (4).
Texas Tech has recorded the most home wins by a margin of 25+ points of any FBS team this season (4).
I’ll lean toward Texas Tech, but this is a weird one with the double-digit line. The Red Raiders were spectacular on the ground versus Kansas last weekend, notching 372 rush yards, 7.4 yards per play and 22 first downs. On defense Texas Tech gave up 319 yards (245 passing), 22 first downs and 7-of-18 on third-down tries. Outside of the one bad quarter it was a solid overall effort. Texas Tech is rolling along nicely through their six wins, scoring at least 34 points in each game so far.
As for Arizona State, they were pretty miserable in the road loss to Utah with 259 total yards, 3.3 yards per play and 7-of-18 on third downs. The defense gave up 276 yards rushing as well, which could spell trouble against Texas Tech’s backfield. The Sun Devils had been playing with fire across a couple of tight wins before that, so the loss wasn’t all that surprising. This weekend will be another tough one.
