Texas State Bobcats Betting Preview

Last season, Texas State managed to put together a pretty solid run for their second consecutive winning campaign. The Bobcats ended up going 8-5 overall with a 5-3 effort in Sun Belt games, putting the team in second place among the West Division behind only Louisiana. Texas State wasn’t able to win more than two consecutive games all year, but they didn’t lose more than two consecutive outings either. Following a road win over South Alabama to close the regular season, the Bobcats took on North Texas in the First Responder Bowl on January 3. That one ended up as a tense 30-28 victory.

Texas State played Eastern Michigan in their first game of the 2025 campaign. The Bobcats started a little slowly, notching a modest 24-17 edge at the break. Texas State scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter however, eventually taking the win 52-27. QB Brad Jackson logged 214 yards and four touchdowns on 18-of-26 passing, while Lincoln Pare had 12 carries for 167 yards and a touchdown to lead the rushers. Beau Sparkas caught all four touchdown passes, topping the receivers with seven grabs for 82 yards.

UTSA Roadrunners Betting Preview

Over on the UTSA side, they had a middling year in conference play last season but things worked out with a strong finish. The Roadrunners were 7-6 overall during that campaign, with a 3-3 run in American Athletic Conference games. That would put UTSA in seventh place among the rankings, behind Army, Tulane, Navy, Memphis, East Carolina and South Florida. UTSA earned a trip to the Myrtle Beach Bowl where they demolished Coastal Carolina 44-15 on December 23, ending the season on a high note.

Unfortunately for the Roadrunners, they were unable to carry the momentum into the opener this year—mostly because it came against a tough team in Texas A&M. UTSA managed to put up points in every quarter—but also allowed points in every quarter—on the way to a 42-24 loss. QB Owen McCown threw for 121 yards on 19-of-32 passing, and Brandon Tennison had a TD pass among his two completions for 49 yards. Topping the rushers was Robert Henry with 177 yards and two scores off 16 totes, while David Amador led the receivers with three grabs for 41 yards.

Texas State vs UTSA Prediction

I’m going to stay with UTSA. You could make a case either way, though; this should be a pretty fun and entertaining game. The Roadrunners had the unfortunate distinction of taking on Texas A&M in this year’s opener, but things didn’t go as badly as they potentially could have. UTSA managed to gather 373 yards of offense (203 rushing), 5.6 yards per play and no turnovers. The 5-of-16 on third-down tries killed a lot of drives though, and the defense was unable to come up with any takeaways while giving up 6.8 yards per play.

As for Texas State, they rolled right past EMU with 606 yards (392 rushing) and 9.2 yards per play alongside 30 first downs. UTSA will have their work cut out for them this weekend, but if the defense plays well I think the Roadrunners pull it off.

Andrew Jett's Pick: UTSA Roadrunners -4.5
