Syracuse Orange Betting Preview

The Orange kicked things off with an unenviable matchup versus Tennessee this year. In that road game, Syracuse ended up falling 45-26. The good news is that the Orange were able to bounce back versus UConn on September 6—but it was a close one. Syracuse needed 14 fourth-quarter points and overtime for a 27-20 comeback win. QB Steve Angeli was 33-of-53 for 417 yards, two TDs and a pick, while Yasin Willis carried 11 times for 48 yards and a score on the ground. Dan Villari caught seven balls for 104 yards to top the receivers.

In game three versus Colgate, Syracuse was able to flex their muscles against an overmatched opponent. The Orange scored 24 points in the second quarter alone on the way to a 66-24 blowout win. Angeli threw for 417 yards and a whopping five scores this time, while lead rusher Will Nixon had 12 carries for 66 yards and a score. Darrell Gill had six catches for 152 yards and two scores of his own.

Clemson Tigers Betting Preview

Over on the Clemson side, they had the unfortunate honor of facing a very tough LSU team in their opener this year. The Tigers fought valiantly in that one but eventually lost 17-10. Clemson was able to bounce back in game two versus Troy, though. The Tigers scored 17 points in the third quarter during a 27-16 win. Cade Klubnik posted 196 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the loss, while Adam Randall led the rush on 21 totes for 112 yards and a TD. Bryant Wesco led the receivers on seven grabs for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Clemson took on Georgia Tech in their third outing last weekend. The Tigers were down 13-7 by the end of the first half and eventually fell in a tough one 24-21. QB Cade Klubnik was 15-of-26 for 207 yards, a TD and a pick. Leading rusher Adam Randall carried 15 times for 80 yards and a score. Bryant Wesco added seven grabs for 126 yards and a touchdown.

Syracuse vs Clemson Prediction

I may take a stab on Syracuse here. The Orange demolished Colgate last Friday to the tune of 620 yards (447 passing), 8.6 yards per play and 32 first downs. It was a pretty solid job by the defense as well (despite 301 passing yards) as the team came up with three takeaways. That said, the UConn game gives me a bit of trepidation when it comes to trusting Syracuse right now. The Orange needed a blistering late comeback to take that one, notching two turnovers and just 5-of-15 on third-down tries along the way. The rush (44 yards) was nearly nonexistent but some of that was due to the comeback effort.

As for Clemson, they took a demoralizing gut punch from Georgia Tech this past weekend. The Tigers had a couple of turnovers in that one and allowed the Yellow Jackets an 8-of-15 success rate on third-down tries. It was a weird game, but not terribly surprising after a lackluster home win versus a Troy team that Clemson should have dominated. The Tigers need a lot of work right now.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Syracuse Orange +17.5
