A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the South Carolina vs LSU game
The Gamecocks have gotten through five games so far this year, maintaining a winning record along the way. South Carolina posted wins in their first two outings over Virginia Tech 24-11 and South Carolina State 38-10. Next came two losses however, as the Gamecocks dropped to Vanderbilt 31-7 and Missouri 29-20. In the loss to the Tigers the Gamecocks posted minus-9 rushing yards alongside just 15 first downs and 3-of-11 on third downs. The 14 penalties for 98 yards didn’t help the cause either.
In their latest outing versus Kentucky on September 27, the Gamecocks were able to get back into the win column. South Carolina was down early but surged in the second quarter on 21 unanswered points for an eventual win 35-13. QB LaNorris Sellers posted a nice 11-of-14 line for 153 yards and also led the rush with 81 yards off 14 carries. Tops in receiving was Vandrevius Jacobs with five catches for 108 yards. Rahsul Faison added a pair of rushing touchdowns in the win as well.
Over on the Tigers’ side, they kicked off the season with a tight 17-10 win over Clemson, then powered past LA Tech 23-7 and Florida 20-10 in the next pair. LSU would then beat Southeastern Louisiana to move to 4-0 overall. In the win over the Lions 56-10, the Tigers scored 28 points in the second quarter alone on the way to 530 total yards and 32 first downs. The LSU defense held the opposition to just 204 total yards and 1-of-10 on third downs.
Matched up against Ole Miss in their last outing on September 27, the Tigers held a 7-3 lead after the first quarter then quickly fell behind. LSU outscored the Rebels 12-7 in the second half but it wasn’t enough in a 24-19 loss. QB Garrett Nussmeier finished 21-of-34 for 197 yards, one score and one pick. Harlem Berry had seven carries for 22 yards and one touchdown, while Zavion Thomas caught three balls for a team-high 63 yards.
Heading into Week 7, Nic Anderson leads LSU for touchdowns (2) this season.
South Carolina Gamecocks Player Prop Facts
Heading into Week 7, Rahsul Faison leads South Carolina for touchdowns (3) this season.
LSU ranks T7th among FBS teams for H2 opponent points per game this season (4.8).
LSU ranks T8th among FBS teams for Q3 opponent points per game this season (1.4).
South Carolina ranks 127th among FBS teams for yards per game this season (308.6).
South Carolina ranks 122nd among FBS teams for rushing yards per game this season (99.8).
I’m going to stay with LSU. The Tigers have had some time to get over a pretty flat offensive effort in the loss to Ole Miss and should do much better here. In their latest defeat, LSU mustered just 254 total yards (197 passing) with 16 first downs and 2-of-11 on third-down tries. The Rebels posted 480 yards and 28 first downs on the other side but nearly gave it away with 14 penalties and two turnovers. The most pressing concern for the Tigers right now however, is the fact that they’ve been able to score more than 23 points exactly once this year so far.
As for South Carolina, they got it done with defense against Kentucky thanks to four takeaways and just 14 first downs allowed. There wasn’t a ton of life in the passing game though, as Jacobs was the only player with more than one catch. This one seems like a lower-scoring finish and a defense-heavy game. I like LSU a little better in the end.
