The Jaguars opened up the season with a double-digit win over Morgan State, but things haven’t gone very well since then. South Alabama would then lose a heartbreaker by two points versus Tulane, then recorded losses to Auburn, Coastal Carolina, North Texas and Troy. In the loss to the Trojans, South Alabama posted a 17-10 second-half edge only to lose in overtime. The Jags offense put up 369 total yards, 265 rush yards, 5.2 yards per play and an 8-of-17 success rate on third downs. The defense gave up 420 yards on the other side, with 217 of those coming on the ground.
In their latest matchup versus Arkansas State last Tuesday, the Jaguars had a 14-3 lead going into the final quarter. South Alabama was outscored 12-0 from there however, resulting in a tough home loss 15-14. QB Bishop Davenport was 18-of-23 for 118 yards while Kentrel Bullock led the rush with 16 totes for 72 yards and a score. Devin Voisin led the receivers with his four catches for 43 yards.
Over on the Georgia State side, they opened up the season with a pair of unenviable matchups and ended up taking losses (big losses) to Ole Miss and Memphis in their first two outings. Georgia State would beat Murray State in game three then fell in another ranked game versus Vanderbilt. The Panthers lost by a touchdown to James Madison ahead of a 41-20 loss to App State. In that one Georgia State gave up points in all four quarters, including 21 in the third alone. The defense would surrender 435 total yards but did pretty well on third downs with a 5-of-15 success rate allowed.
In Saturday night’s matchup versus Georgia Southern, the Panthers held a lead 24-20 going into the final quarter. Georgia State was outscored 21-0 from there however, eventually falling 41-24 on the road. QB Cameran Brown was 29-of-38 for 280 yards and also led the rush with 15 carries for 120 yards and a score. Tops in receiving was Javon Robinson with seven catches for 71 yards in the losing effort.
Heading into Week 9, Reed Chandley ranks 5th amongst qualified players for gross average yards per punt (47.9) this season.

Georgia State ranks 136th among FBS teams for average point differential in fourth quarters this season (-9.7).
Georgia State ranks T134th among FBS teams for Q3 opponent points per game this season (11.4).
South Alabama ranks T125th among FBS teams for Q2 points per game this season (4.3).

I’m going to take a stab on South Alabama here. The Jaguars’ season hasn’t been great, but to their credit the team has been (mostly) competitive in winnable games. South Alabama didn’t play great in their latest outing versus Arkansas State though, posting 118 pass yards, 4-of-14 on third downs and a whopping 14 penalties for 130 yards. The good news is that the defense was pretty solid overall, and the Jags have been within one score in each of the last two games.
As for Georgia State, they were able to hang with a middling Georgia Southern team for most of the game but ultimately couldn’t overcome the 15 penalties and 420 yards (208 rushing) allowed. That makes four straight losses for the Panthers, and they’ve given up a whopping 41 or more points in three of those. I’m not super positive about Georgia State’s odds these days.
