A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the Samford vs Baylor game
The Bulldogs probably should have matched up much better versus the University of West Georgia in their opener on August 28, but things didn’t go very well at all in that game. Samford faced a 10-0 deficit by the third quarter and eventually limped to a blowout loss 34-3. QB Quincy Crittendon threw for a 22-of-29 line for 154 yards, and CJ Evans led the rush with seven totes for 23 yards. Preston Bird was the leading team receiver in the loss, notching 11 catches for 95 yards.
In game two versus the Citadel last weekend, Samford gave up double-digit points in each of the last three quarters (including 20 in the fourth) during a 40-13 blowout loss. Crittendon was 40-of-56 for 324 yards and three interceptions while also leading the team in rushing with 14 carries for 35 yards. Jaden Gibson was the team’s leading receiver, hauling in 10 catches for 91 yards.
Over on the Bears’ side, they played a wild game versus Auburn in their opener but came out on the losing end. Baylor scored in every quarter (and gave up points in every quarter) along the way to a 38-24 defeat. Quarterback Sawyer Robertson finished on 27-of-48 passing for 419 yards and a trio of TDs. Kole Wilson led the receivers with eight catches for 138 of those yards, and Michael Trigg had 99 yards and a score on seven grabs. Topping the rushers in the losing effort was Baylor’s Bryson Washington with 54 yards on 14 totes.
Game two versus SMU last weekend was another wild one—but this time Baylor emerged victorious. The Bears came back from an early 10-0 deficit with 21 second-quarter points and eventually won in double-overtime 48-45. Robertson finished 34-of-50 for 440 yards and four touchdowns this time, while Washington carried 31 times for 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Josh Cameron was tops in receiving this time with nine catches for 151 yards and two scores, while Ashtyn Hawkins had 10 grabs for 145 yards. Kobe Prentice added four grabs for 63 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Baylor ranks 131st among FBS teams for rushing yards allowed per game this season (235.0).
Baylor ranks T13th among FBS teams for yards per game this season (542.0).
I’m probably just staying with Baylor. The Bears are coming off a crazy game versus a tough SMU team, eventually coming out victorious at Gerald J Ford Stadium. Baylor logged 601 offensive yards in that one (440 passing), 6.4 yards per play, 30 first downs and 3-of-6 on fourth-down tries. The two lost fumbles hurt, as did the rough 6-of-17 on third-down conversions. On defense Baylor gave up 459 yards (295 passing), 7.0 yards per play, 21 first downs and 2-of-2 on fourth downs. That said, the third-down defense was pretty good (5-of-13) and the Bears got an interception.
It was a better performance compared to the Auburn game—especially on the ground. Baylor gave up a whopping 307 rush yards while collecting just 64 themselves during that loss at McLane Stadium. Looking ahead, this game should be a reprieve after a pair of tough outings to start. I like the Bears to control this one front to back in a smooth cover.
