Old Dominion Monarchs Betting Preview

The Monarchs had a pretty mediocre season in 2024, but the good news is that they exceeded some fairly modest expectations. Old Dominion was initially picked to finish in sixth place among the East Division of the Sun Belt during the preseason media poll. Following a 5-7 overall run and a 4-4 result in conference play however, ODU landed behind only Marshall, Georgia Southern and James Madison in the East. Following four wins in five games during the middle of the season however, Old Dominion lost three of their final four outings to miss out on bowl eligibility. Their final outing was a road win over Arkansas State, though.

Head coach Ricky Rahne is back for his sixth year in the job with Old Dominion in 2025. Rahne retains the key positions in his coaching staff, and he’ll be looking to outperform expectations once again. The Monarchs were chosen as fifth-place finishers in this year’s media poll, nipping right on the heels of Coastal Carolina in fourth. One question mark however, will be the effectiveness of this season’s offense. ODU lost almost all of their top receivers during the offseason so they’ll need a ton of new names to step up in key roles.

Indiana Hoosiers Betting Preview

Over on the Hoosiers’ side, they performed quite well last season—especially in a very, very difficult conference—but the campaign ended in disappointment. Indiana bagged the first 10-win season in program history and their first seven-win effort in the Big Ten, posting an overall run of 11-2 with a very nice 8-1 result in conference play. After opening with a 10-game win streak, Indiana took a tough road loss to Ohio State before finishing off with a win over Purdue, in their first CFP appearance in school history, Indiana lost to Notre Dame 27-17 in the First Round on December 20.

Going into the 2025 season, the Hoosiers have some much-need experience on the coaching staff. Head coach Curt Cignetti is back for his second year, and he’ll have his main coordinators back with him. Still, Indiana needed an offseason reload at some key positions following last year’s solid run. QB Kurtis Rourke left for the NFL Draft, as did defensive lineman CJ West. Even worse, backup QB Tayven Jackson transferred out to UCF along with several other key names like WR Donaven McCulley (Michigan). The RB corps also took a big hit, so we’ll be seeing plenty of new faces on the Indiana offense in 2025.

Why the Indiana Hoosiers will win

  • Indiana has won each of its last eight games at Memorial Stadium (Bloomington).
  • Old Dominion has lost seven of its last eight road openers.
  • Indiana has covered the spread in nine of its last 10 games as a favorite.

Why the Old Dominion Monarchs will win

  • The underdog has won five of Old Dominion’s last seven games.
  • The team ranked 20th in the AP Poll has lost five of its last seven games.
  • Indiana has failed to cover the spread in each of its last three August games against non-AP-ranked teams.
  • The road team has covered the spread in each of Old Dominion’s last three games.

Total Points Facts

  • Each of Indiana’s last four season openers have gone UNDER the total points line.
  • Four of Old Dominion’s last five games have gone OVER the total points line.

Old Dominion vs Indiana Prediction

I’m going to try Old Dominion in this one. Probably not touching it, though. The Monarchs are a trendy pick to post a great season (in relative terms at least) and I’m likely in that camp as well. Sure, there are plenty of question marks on offense after some heavy losses but the incoming guys could thrive under an experienced coaching staff. The offensive line is also a rebuild, but the tackles are solid. Defensively, Old Dominion should be a great pass-rushing team this season and they’ve got a potentially stellar LB in Jason Henderson. In fact all the linebackers in the main rotation are pretty darn good.

All of that said, this is a brutally tough opener matchup for the Monarchs. Still, I think they’ll hold their own and power out a cover in the end.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Old Dominion Monarchs +22.5
