A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the Miami-Ohio vs Northern Illinois game
The RedHawks opened up the season on a skid. Miami-OH had a tricky road matchup versus Wisconsin in their first outing, falling 17-0 in a shutout. The Rutgers matchup on September 6 was no closer as the RedHawks fell 45-17 in that one. The good news is that Miami-Ohio was competitive versus UNLV; the bad news was that they lost at home 41-38. In that game the RedHawks offense gained 396 yards and couldn’t overcome three turnovers with a rough 1-of-8 result on third-down tries.
In last weekend’s game versus Lindenwood, the RedHawks managed to score points in all four quarters—including 14 in the third quarter alone—during a 38-0 shutout win at home. QB Henry Hesson was 13-of-21 for 208 yards and a couple of touchdowns, and Kenny Tracy had 20 carries for 134 yards and a score. Tops in receiving was Kamryn Perry with three catches for 122 yards and two TDs.
Over on the Northern Illinois side, they’ve got four games in the books so far this year. The Huskies were able to eke past Holy Cross 19-17 in their opener, but then fell 20-9 versus Maryland in game two. Game three was another loss, this time 38-10 versus Mississippi State. In that road defeat, NIU managed just 267 total yards (125 rushing), 14 first downs and 1-of-9 on third-down conversions. The Huskies defense gave up 452 yards on the other side—including 292 yards on the ground.
Matched up against San Diego State, Northern Illinois got into a defensive battle at home—and came out on the wrong end. A fourth-quarter field goal by the Aztecs proved to be the difference in a 6-3 NIU loss. QB Josh Holst was 6-of-14 for 49 yards, and Telly Johnson carried 16 times for 53 yards. DeAree Rogers notched 51 yards on five catches in the defeat.
Heading into Week 6, Chavon Wright leads Northern Illinois for touchdowns (1) this season.
Kamryn Perry has recorded 75+ receiving yards in three consecutive games – equal-longest streak in the FBS, heading into Week 6.
Northern Illinois ranks 135th among FBS teams for yards per game this season (251.0).
Northern Illinois is one of two FBS teams to score 20 points or less in every game this season.
Miami (OH) ranks 133rd among FBS teams for time of possession per game this season (25:16).
Miami (OH) ranks 132nd among FBS teams for Q4 points per game this season (1.8).
I’ll lean toward NIU, but I’m probably not touching this one. The Huskies are coming off a weird loss to a pretty good San Diego State team. The offense generated just 57 passing yards in that one, with Rogers accounting for 51 of those himself. The 3.1 yards per play, 10 first downs and 4-of-15 on third-down tries were only good enough to muster one field goal in the game. That said, the defense was great on 266 yards allowed, 4.0 yards per play, 19 first downs, two picks and 5-of-15 on third downs.
As for Miami-Ohio, they managed a much-needed blowout victory versus an overmatched Lindenwood team last weekend. The RedHawks posted 472 yards (264 rushing) on offense but went just 4-of-13 on third downs. The defense gave up only 146 yards on the other side and came away with a couple of interceptions. NIU is going to represent a big uptick in competition though, so I don’t think Miami-OH will be able to replicate last weekend’s performance. If I had to guess, I’d peg this one as a lower-scoring defensive game.
