The Line: Betting Odds: Liberty -25.5 — Over/Under:
The Maine Black Bears and Liberty Flames meet Saturday in college football action at Williams Stadium. Here’s a Maine vs Liberty Prediction. This article will include a Maine vs Liberty Pick.
Maine Black Bears Betting Preview
The Maine Black Bears won five games last season and enter the fourth year under coach Jordan Stevens. Coordinators Mikahael Waters and Umberto Di Meo are back for second seasons, the first time Stevens has had consistency on the coaching staff.
Quarterback Carter Peevy is coming off a season where he threw for 2,400 yards and 18 touchdowns. He’ll have familiar weapons, including running back Brian Santana-Fis, and top receivers such as Molayo Irefin and Nick Laughlin. Hartford transfer Scott Woods joins the Black Bears, and he was a first-team All-Ivy selection as a return guy last year.
Defensively, Maine lost a lot of production, but does bring back linebacker Christian Thomas and defensive back Devin Vaught. Defensive back Corey Wilson comes from Hampton and has 31 games under his belt. Still, there’s a lot of production to replace, and this side of the ball has to hit the ground running if the Black Bears are going to take a step forward and truly compete in the CAA.
Liberty Flames Betting Preview
The Liberty Flames have won a combined 21 games in the last two seasons and enter the third year under coach Jamey Chadwell. Liberty has won eight or more games in each of the last six seasons.
Coastal Carolina transfer Ethan Vasko will get the nod at quarterback, and he threw for 2,100 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. A receiving group of Reese Smith, Tyson Mobley and Elijah Canion is probably the best in the C-USA. The offensive line is one of the best in the country, led by Aaron Fenimore who is on the Lombardi Award Watch List. If Vasko can trim down the mistakes and be more accurate with the football, Liberty has a chance to be above-average offensively.
Defensively, Liberty has question marks in the front seven due to so much lost production. Linebacker Joseph Carter is arguably the best in the conference. A cornerback duo of Dexter Ricks and Amarian Williams brings playmaking in the secondary. Outside of that is where the question marks pop up. However, coordinators Kyle Krantz and Skylor Magee have worked together long enough to believe they can figure it out.
Liberty is the favorite to win the C-USA entering the season, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Flames in the top-25 at some point.
Why the Liberty Flames will win
- Liberty has won 13 of its last 14 games against non-AP-ranked teams at Arthur L. Williams Stadium.
Why the Maine Black Bears will win
- Liberty has failed to cover the spread in 10 of its last 13 games.
Liberty Flames Player Prop Facts
- Tyson Mobley led Liberty for receptions (29) last season.
Maine vs Liberty Prediction
Maine has a chance to be decent in the CAA this season, but this isn’t one of those games. Liberty looks sharp on both sides of the ball and could soon be a top-25 team. Liberty should win the C-USA and could sneak into the playoffs if it’s able to run the table. I’m high on Liberty this season and will be watching closely. The line is a bit beefy, but I’m laying the points with the Flames anyway.
