The LSU Tigers have won nine games in each of the last three years and enters the fourth season under coach Brian Kelly. Coordinators Cortez Hankton and Joe Sloan each return for their second seasons.
LSU has one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Garrett Nussmeier, who topped 4,000 yards and 29 touchdowns last season. Running back Caden Durham is coming off a strong freshman season, while receivers Aaron Anderson and Barion Brown are capable of stepping up in expanded roles. The LSU offensive line has questions, but this offense should shine behind a guy who is capable of winning the Heisman Trophy.
Defensively, LSU is led by first-team All-SEC linebacker Whit Weeks. A third-team All-ACC cornerback in Mansoor Delane transfers from Virginia Tech, while two Florida players join the defensive line in Patrick Payton and Jack Pyburn. LSU will also see the return of Harold Perkins Jr., who missed last year with an injury but is a two-time All-SEC selection. Wide receiver Antonio Williams is coming off a 900-yard season and 7 touchdowns, while the Clemson offensive line returns four starters. Freshman running back Gideon Davidson has big play ability and could take the ACC by storm if he lives up to the hype. This Clemson offense has a chance to be one of the best in all of college football.
There are new voices leading this Clemson defense, but Sammy Brown returns after 80 tackles and five sacks. TJ Parker has 16.5 sacks and 33 tackles for loss in two seasons and is a future NFL draft pick. Peter Woods is a force on the defensive line and entering his third season. Cornerback Avieon Terrell was a second-team All-ACC selection last season, and linebacker Wade Woodaz is coming off his best season yet. Purdue transfer Will Heldt is also worth noting after 56 tackles and five sack last season for the Boilermakers.
This is the most complete Clemson roster we’ve seen in a while, and anything short of the college football playoff would be a disappointment for the Tigers.
