Rare Non-Conference Road Game for Iowa State

It was a rare non-conference road game for Iowa State as they were going on the road to take on a non-power five team. The Cyclones are one of the rare teams that have already played three games, and they have been able to win all of them. They have wins over Iowa, South Dakota, and Kansas State to open the season. In the last game against the Hawkeeys, they were only able to win by three points, but those games always seem to be close, no matter how good each of the teams is. Two games ago against South Dakota, Iowa scored 55 points, and the defense gave up only seven.

Against Iowa, Rocco Becht completed 18 of his 27 passes for 134 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions. The rushing game also wasn’t consistent enough, and Abu Sama was the top rusher, finishing with 47 yards on 11 carries. This game should be a good tune up, or at least that’s what they hope, and they really need the offense to be quite impressive in this game.

Why Iowa State Will Beat Arkansas State

  • Arkansas State has lost nine of its last 10 games against AP-ranked teams.
  • Iowa State has won seven of its last eight games.
  • Iowa State has covered the spread in four of its last five games against non-conference opponents.
  • Arkansas State has failed to cover the spread in four of its last five games as an underdog against top-15 AP-ranked teams.

Can Arkansas State Put up More of a Fight?

Arkansas State in the first game was able to knock off Southeast Missouri State 42-24. In the last game, though, against Arkansas, the offense only managed 14 points, while the defense gave up 56 points. At the end of the first quarter, they were down 28-7, and by that time it was too little too late to really make much of a comeback attempt. Even though they lost, the defense did have two interceptions, and that should at least give the defense a little bit of confidence, even if the rest was awful.

Jaylen Raynor completed 21 of his 33 passes for 125 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He was also the top rusher and he finished with 15 carries for 38 yards. Kameron Thomas was the top non-quarterback, rushing five times for 35 yards. In this game, it’s going to need to be a more balanced offensive attack.

Iowa State vs Arkansas State Prediction

Iowa State is going to have no issue here against Arkansas State, even on the road. Even with the two turnovers created by Arkansas State in the last game, the defense still gave up 56 points. In the first game where they won, Arkansas State’s defense gave up 24 points. Becht is going to have a huge game through the air, and Iowa State is going to run wild on the ground. Arkansas State’s offense might put up maybe even 14 points, but that isn’t going to be close enough with how bad their defense is going to be here. Iowa State is going to win this game with ease. Back Iowa State to cover the spread.
