Hampton Pirates Betting Preview
Hampton failed to make much noise in 2025 during a forgettable campaign. The Pirates went just 2-10 overall with a completely futile 0-8 run in the Coastal Athletic Association. With that result Hampton landed in the basement of the standings, one game behind both Bryant and Albany. The Pirates closed out the year on a six-game losing streak.
The Pirates kicked off their season with a matchup versus VA Lynchburg on August 29. In that one Hampton managed to score in every quarter along the way to a blowout shutout win 45-0. QB Jalen Woods was 15-of-26 for 191 yards, three scores and a pick. Amari Pryear had eight carries for 132 yards and Dedrick Borden had three catches for 45 yards and a TD.

Over on the Terrapins’ side, they limped to a 4-8 overall record last season. In a tough Big Ten, Maryland could only find a 1-8 result, landing ahead of only Michigan State and Purdue in the standings. The Terrapins’ only conference win was over Wisconsin as part of a four-game win streak to start the year. Maryland would implode from there though, losing eight straight to finish off the campaign.
2026 is the proverbial make-or- break campaign for head coach Mike Locksley (eighth season). He’ll have a new offensive coordinator in Clint Trickett, who will be tasked with unlocking the potential of sophomore QB Malik Washington. The good news for the Terrapins is that they return a whopping 71 percent of their overall production from last season, ranking second in the nation in that regard. On defense, that number is 74 percent for Maryland.

Hampton vs Maryland Prediction
I’m going to stay with Maryland but realistically the line’s too thick to mess with. The Terrapins are on a “bowl berth or bust” campaign this season; anything less would be considered a disappointment (and may mark the end of Locksley’s tenure). Maryland has ample talent on the roster to accomplish that feat, and their defensive line in particular looks pretty stout (even without Zahir Mathis). The schedule isn’t super forgiving but it could be worse. Marquis games this year include matchups versus UCLA, at Nebraska, at Ohio State, versus Illinois, at USC and versus Penn State.
As for Hampton, they did well in their opener against an overmatched opponent. The only real mistakes were the 13 penalties for 135 yards and the three turnovers. The defense held strong with three takeaways, 166 passing yards and 12 first downs allowed. That said, this next game will be a real wakeup call.
