The Panthers have had a pretty rough year so far, and it all started with a couple of losses to tough teams in Ole Miss and Memphis in their first two outings. Georgia State would get their first win over Murray State in game three, but then hit the skids again versus Vanderbilt, James Madison, App State and Georgia Southern. In the loss to the Eagles, the Panthers posted 444 total yards, 27 first downs and a nice 10-of-14 on third-down tries but also committed a whopping 15 penalties as a team, resulting in a loss of 120 yards throughout the game.
In their last matchup versus South Alabama on October 23, the Panthers were down 28-14 by the end of the first half. Georgia State got better after the break but still ended up with a loss at home 38-31 in the end. QB Cameran Brown had 241 yards, four TDs and a pick on 19-of-33 passing, and Jordon Simmons had 11 carries for 78 yards. Leading the receivers was Ted Hurst with five catches for 110 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the losing effort.
Over on the Coastal Carolina side, they went 1-2 in their first three outings with a win over Charleston Southern in between losses to Virginia and East Carolina—both blowouts. Coastal Carolina went 3-1 in the next four though, losing to Old Dominion amid wins over South Alabama, LA-Monroe and App State. In the win over the Mountaineers the Chanticleers notched 410 total yards, 246 rush yards, 6.5 yards per play, 23 first downs and 6-of-10 on third-down tries. The defense gave up 410 yards and 27 first downs on the other side.
Coastal Carolina last met up with Marshall on October 30 and kept the winning ways going. The Chanticleers were down 20-17 by the end of the half, then hit a 27-7 run from there on the way to a comeback win 44-27. QB Samari Collier went 8-of-20 for 196 yads, two scores and a pick through the air and added 22 carries for 75 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground. Leading rusher Dominic Knicely had five carries for 76 yards and a touchdown, and Malcolm Gillie led the receivers on his 69-yard touchdown catch.
I’ll stick with Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers started a bit slowly last Thursday versus Marshall but everything worked out well in the end. Coastal managed 410 total yards, 214 rush yards and 6.2 yards per play but also had just 16 first downs, 6-of-16 on third-down tries and two turnovers, so there’s plenty of room for improvement. The defense had a whopping five takeaways though, in addition to just 6-of-16 allowed on third downs. The Chanticleers have scored great over their last two games, posting a combined 89 points in that pair.
As for Georgia State, they’ve given up 38 or more points in three straight games so the Chanticleers should have some opportunities here.
