A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the Gardner-Webb vs Georgia Tech game
The Runnin’ Bulldogs didn’t have a great campaign in 2024. Gardner-Webb managed to go just 4-8 overall under first-year head coach Cris Reisert alongside a 3-5 run in Big South-OVC play. The Bulldogs finished ahead of only Eastern Illinois and Charleston Southern in the standings with that effort. After a 1-5 start Gardner-Webb found their footing with a 3-1 stretch in late October and early November. The Bulldogs would finish the season with losses to Tennessee State and Western Illinois, however.
In their first action of the 2025 season versus Western Carolina, Gardner-Webb got themselves into a shootout. After a 21-7 deficit in the first quarter, the Bulldogs kept the pace until the fourth. A 24-3 surge in the final period helped propel the Bulldogs to a 52-45 victory in the end. Nate Hampton went just 12-of-30 passing but posted two TDs along with 263 yards. Hampton also led the rush, scoring a whopping four touchdowns among his 28 carries for 132 yards. QuaSean Holmes added 13 carries for 116 yards and a score of his own, while Carson Gresock chipped in 11 totes for 85 yards. Chris Lofton was the top receiver on three catches for 102 yards, but Anthony Lowe did the scoring with five grabs for 80 yards and two TDs.
Over on the Yellow Jackets’ side, they had some ups and downs last season before an eventual bowl-game loss. Georgia Tech would ultimately go 7-6 overall with a pretty good 5-3 stretch in the ACC. That would put the Yellow Jackets behind SMU, Clemson, Miami, Syracuse and Louisville in the conference standings. Georgia Tech had a 3-4 run in the middle of the season then took wins over Miami and NC State before a loss at Georgia. In the Birmingham Bowl versus Vanderbilt on December 27, the Jackets ended up losing 35-27.
This year the Yellow Jackets kicked off their campaign with a road matchup versus Colorado. After falling behind early, Georgia Tech scored 13 points in the second quarter during a 27-20 victory. QB Haynes King went 13-of-20 for 143 yards and an interception, but led the rushing attack with 19 carries for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Bailey Stockton was the top receiver during the win with his four catches for 48 yards.
I’ll probably just stay with Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets overcame some ugly mistakes in their win over Colorado, but everything worked out in the end. The three turnovers (two fumbles) and eight penalties for 65 yards nearly overshadowed Georgia Tech’s 463 yards (320 rushing), 6.8 yards per play and 27 first downs. On defense the Jackets couldn’t bag any takeaways but kept things manageable with 305 yards (159 passing) and 5-of-13 on third-down tries allowed. Overall it was a pretty good effort (minus the turnovers and penalties) and an impressive road win for the Jackets’ first time out. I like Georgia Tech to keep it going this weekend against a much more manageable opponent.
