The 49ers have four games in the books so far this year, generating a 1-3 record along the way. The first two outings were both losses, as Charlotte dropped 34-11 to Appalachian State in the opener and 20-3 versus North Carolina in game two. The 49ers were able to get their first win of the season on September 13 versus Monmouth though, powering out a 42-35 home win thanks to 21 third-quarter points. Charlotte’s offense was cooking in that one, generating 563 yards (382 passing), 7.8 yards per play and 29 first downs. The three turnovers and 11 penalties hurt the cause, however.
Way back on September 18 in their most recent appearance, Charlotte took on Rice. The 49ers gave up a touchdown in each quarter, ending up with a 28-17 loss in the end. QB Grayson Loftis finished 15-of-31 for 186 yards and a touchdown, while Rod Gainey led the rush on 51 yards from eight carries. Javen Nicholas caught five balls for 93 yards and a touchdown, and Sean Brown had three grabs for 47 yards in the defeat.
Over on the South Florida side, they’ve been able to get through four games so far this year as well. The Bulls didn’t have a ton of trouble versus Boise State in their opener, taking the win 34-7 on August 28. Game two was a thrilling road win 18-16 over Florida, but the Bulls were demolished by Miami 49-12 in the next game. During that tough matchup, South Florida surrendered 576 yards (371 passing), 8.5 yards per play, 27 first downs and 7-of-11 on third-down tries. The offense had a couple of turnovers and could only find 15 first downs.
The good news for South Florida is that they were able to get back in the win column during their last outing versus South Carolina State on September 20. The Bulls scored in every quarter—including 35 points in the third period alone—bagging a 63-14 blowout win in the end. QB Byrum Brown walked away with a 14-of-20 line for 236 yards, four scores and a pick. Leading the rush was Sam Franklin with 91 yards and two scores off four carries, and Nykahi Davenport had four carries for 52 yards and a touchdown of his own. Tops in receiving was Chas Nimrod with four grabs for 119 yards and two TDs.
Heading into Week 6, Mac Harris leads the American Conference for forced fumbles (2) this season.

South Florida ranks 2nd among FBS teams for average point differential in third quarters this season (+12.8).
South Florida ranks 8th among FBS teams for H2 points per game this season (21.0).
Charlotte ranks 131st among FBS teams for rushing yards per game this season (88.3).
Charlotte ranks T129th among FBS teams for H1 points per game this season (5.5).
I’m staying with South Florida. It’s been a while since either of these teams have been on the field, so they both should be rested up and ready for this matchup. The Bulls didn’t have too much difficulty against SC State in their last outing, generating 504 yards (252 passing) and 9.3 yards per play. The eight penalties and spotty 4-of-10 on third downs were about the only things to complain about. That gives South Florida 34 or more points in two of their four games—excluding the tight win over Florida and the blowout loss to Miami. Charlotte should be right in the Bulls’ wheelhouse, and I like USF to take control of this one from the very start.
