The Crimson Tide went to Florida State in their opener and got blindsided in a road upset 31-17. To Alabama’s credit, they recovered well over the next five games, rattling off victories in succession versus Louisiana-Monroe, Wisconsin, Georgia, Vanderbilt and Missouri. In the win over the Tigers on October 11, the Tide gave up just 1-of-10 on third-down conversion attempts and came away with a couple of interceptions. The Alabama offense mustered 325 yards on the other side with 22 first downs and 4.3 yards per play in a tight three-point win.
In their big primetime matchup with Tennessee on Saturday, the Tide gave up points in three of four quarters—but managed to score in all four quarters themselves. The end result was a 37-20 victory at home. Ty Simpson threw for 253 yards and two scores on 19-of-29 passing and Germie Bernard had four carries for a team-high 49 yards. Leading the receivers in the win was Ryan Williams with five catches for 87 yards.
Over on the Gamecocks’ side, they got off to a pretty good start with double-digit wins over Virginia Tech and South Carolina State. South Carolina took their first loss of the season at home versus Vanderbilt (in blowout fashion), then lost to Missouri in game four. Following a win over Kentucky the Gamecocks took another loss to LSU on October 11 in a road matchup. South Carolina gained just 124 passing yards in the loss to the Tigers and went just 6-of-16 on third downs. The two turnovers and 13 total penalties didn’t help matters either.
Matched up against Oklahoma last weekend, the Gamecocks were down by a touchdown going into the second half. South Carolina was shut out the rest of the way however and eventually lost 26-7 at home. QB LaNorris Sellers was 17-of-25 for 124 yards and a touchdown, while Rahsul Faison carried 10 times for 50 yards to lead the rush. Jayden Sellers led the receivers on six grabs for 57 yards and Nyck Harbor caught the touchdown in the defeat.
Heading into Week 9, Monkell Goodwine leads the Southeastern Conference for forced fumbles (2) this season.

South Carolina ranks 129th among FBS teams for yards per game this season (297.7).
South Carolina ranks 129th among FBS teams for time of possession per game this season (27:01).
Alabama ranks 6th among FBS teams for red zone percentage this season (96.9).
Alabama ranks 7th among FBS teams for time of possession per game this season (33:36).
I’ll stick with Alabama. The Tide put up a nice effort at home against a good Tennessee team last weekend, notching 373 yards, 6.1 yards per play and 23 first downs. On defense Alabama gave up 410 yards and 27 first downs but stood pretty strong on third downs with 5-of-13 allowed. The Tide have a pair of big games looming versus LSU and Oklahoma (both at home) next month, but if they don’t overlook this weekend’s matchup Alabama should be fine.
As for South Carolina, they understandably had issues with a tough Oklahoma team—especially in the second half. The Gamecocks had two picks, 3.3 yards per play and 3-of-15 on third-down tries in a pretty rough offensive game. The defense gave up 50 percent (8-of-16) on third downs and couldn’t generate any takeaways on the other side. That makes just 17 combined points in the last two games (both versus ranked teams) for South Carolina. This weekend (and next weekend versus Ole Miss) won’t get any easier.
