Braylon Braxton threw for 141 yards and two touchdowns, while AJ Turner rushed for 119 yards and one score in the game.
Marshall didn’t face much of a test in their first game of the season, but they were able to get three quarterbacks some playing time, which is always a good idea in case of an injury. The Thundering Herd dominated both sides of the ball, but we will get a true sense of what they look like in this game. Marshall will play against Ohio State following this game.
Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview
The Virginia Tech Hokies are 0-1 this season after they lost to Vanderbilt in overtime by a score of 34-27 last week. Virginia Tech trailed 17-0 late in the first half and 20-10 in the third quarter, but they were able to come back and take a 27-20 lead with about four minutes left, before allowing the game-tying touchdown late in the fourth. Virginia Tech lucked out by Vanderbilt missing a game-winning field goal in regulation, but they were unable to score in overtime for the loss. Virginia Tech outgained Vanderbilt by a total of 397-371 and went 7-15 on third down in the loss. Kyron Drones threw for 322 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, while Ali Jennings caught two passes for 91 yards and a score.
Virginia Tech really struggled to score in the first half last week, but they controlled a good portion of the second half, before losing in overtime. The Hokies will look for a more consistent effort on offense, while also trying to contain the quarterback, as they allowed the Vandy QB to rush for over 100 yards.
Marshall vs Virginia Tech Prediction
Virginia Tech comes into this matchup after a disappointing week one loss and they will look to bounce back with a better effort at home. These two teams played last season, with Marshall winning by a score of 24-17. The Thundering Herd were able to easily pick up a victory in their first game of the season, but that may hurt them here, as Virginia Tech is battle-tested and played in a tough week one game. I do think Virginia Tech will be able to avoid the upset here, but I am not sold on their defense getting enough stops to cover the spread. Take the Thundering Herd with the points in this matchup.
