The Appalachian State Mountaineers are 1-0 this season after they defeated East Tennessee State by a score of 38-10 last week. Appalachian State led 17-7 at halftime, but that lead was cut to 17-10 in the third quarter. The Mountaineers did score the final 21 points in the game to pull away for the 28-point win. Appalachian State outgained ETSU by a total of 500-305 and neither team turned the ball over in the game. The Mountaineers went 6-13 on third down and 1-2 on fourth down in the win. Joey Aguilar threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns, while Kaedin Robinson caught eight passes for 103 yards in the victory.
Appalachian State struggled to create separation in this game for the first 2.5 quarters, but they were able to make some adjustments and finally pulled away in the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers did rack up a ton of yards offensively and the defense played pretty well, but they will have a very tough test in this game. App State will meet East Carolina after this one.
Clemson Tigers Betting Preview
The Clemson Tigers are 0-1 this year after they lost to Georgia by a score of 34-3 in their first game. Clemson struggled to move the ball in the first half of this game and they trailed 6-0 at the half. The Tigers allowed Georgia to score early in the third quarter, but they did kick a field goal to cut the deficit to 13-3 halfway through the third. After that point, it was all Georgia, as they outscored Clemson by a total of 21-0 to end the game. Clemson was outgained by a total of 447-189 and they turned the ball over once in the loss. The Tigers went 4-13 on third down and 0-1 on fourth down in the game. Cade Klubnik threw for 142 yards and one interception, while Phil Mafah rushed for 59 yards on 16 carries.
Clemson’s defense held up against that mighty Georgia offense for the first three quarters, but they allowed 14 points in the fourth. I was impressed with the Clemson defense and they should have a great season against teams not named Georgia. On the other side, the Clemson offense was a big issue, but that could have been mainly due to the fantastic Georgia defense. Clemson will face NC State following this game.
Appalachian State vs Clemson Prediction
Clemson ended up getting blown out by Georgia in their first game and while this will be an easier opponent, they still need to be careful against the App State team. Appalachian State should be one of the better groups of five teams in the country and their offense is solid. I do think the Clemson defense will shine once again in this game and the results will show, as they won’t be facing Georgia. I am worried about the Clemson offense, but I do think Klubnik will be improved this season, regardless of what we saw last week. This is a pretty big spread, but I think the Clemson defense will be the difference. Take the Tigers at home.
