Quarterback Play Impressed for BYU

In the first game, BYU faced off Southern Illinois, and they were able to secure a 41-13 victory. At the end of the first quarter, they were up 14-0 and they never looked back on the way to the victory. Jake Retzlaff was under center for the Cougars and he completed 20 of his 30 passes for 348 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. It was a running back by committee with two different players finishing with 13 carries. LJ Martin finished with 13 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown. Hinkley Ropati also finished with 13 carries for 57 yards and a touchdown. 

Chase Roberts looks to be a mismatch out wide and he caught seven passes for 108 yards. On defense, they weren’t great against the run, especially when the quarterback ran, but they stepped up against the pass. They allowed DJ Williams to complete only 10 of his 20 passes for 98 yards and they did intercept him once. BYU will face Wyoming, Kansas State, and Baylor following this one.

SMU Look for Third Win

SMU is one of the few teams that have played two games already, and they were able to win each of the first two games. In the first game against the Nevada Wolfpack, they were able to secure a 29-24 victory, and in the last game against Houston Christian, they were able to secure a 59-7 victory. At the end of the first quarter, they were up 28-0 and they never looked back on the way to the victory. 

SMU is one of few teams across college football that are expected to split time between two quarterbacks. Kevin Jennings completed 10 of his 14 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. Preston Stone completed 6 of his 9 passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns. On defense in the last game, they had two interceptions. They also did a great job of stopping the run game. It’s going to be important in this game that they step up and slow down the run early. 

BYU vs SMU Prediction

SMU wants to play two quarterbacks because they are both talented, but at the end of the day, I think it’s actually going to hurt them. They aren’t able to get into a rhythm and the lack of that is going to hurt them. BYU might not be as good as the last few years but they still have a good quarterback and they are going to get good quarterback play here. They might not win, but BYU is going to keep this one close. Back BYU against the spread.
