The Washington State Cougars will head down to Berkeley to face the California Golden Bears in Pac-12 play this weekend from California Memorial Stadium on ESPN2.
Washington State Cougars Preview
Washington State dropped to 4-5 after losing to Stanford in Pullman, 10-7. The Cougars have gone ghost over the last six weeks of play, and they’ll look to avoid a sixth straight loss this weekend. The Wazzu offense is scoring 29.3 ppg, while passing for 338.5 ypg, rushing for 92.2 ypg, and converting 50% of their third downs.
Wazzu Player Notes
Cam Ward had another forgettable outing in a losing effort, as he went for a season-low 192 yards and an interception. The junior quarterback hasn’t looked like himself since the road loss to UCLA, and he’ll attempt to flip the script here in Berkeley. Ward has thrown for 1,783 yards, with 14 touchdowns to three interceptions over sox games.
Wazzu defers to the run game, but Nakia Watson has scored in three of the last five games, and he leads the team with 153 rushing yards.
UNLV transfer Kyle Williams scored in all four of their wins to open the season, and he leads the Cougs in receptions (33) and receiving yards (448).
The Washington St. defense allows 28.5 points per game.
California Golden Bears Preview
Cal comes in at 3-6 after losing to Oregon in Eugene, 63-19. The Golden Bears were no match for the Ducks at the Zoo, and they’ll look to regroup here against a struggling Wazzu team. The Cal offense is scoring 30.8 ppg, while passing for 237.3 ypg, rushing for 216.3 ypg, and converting 41.8% of their third downs.
Cal Player Notes
Fernando Mendoza tossed multiple scores in the three games prior to the loss to Oregon, and he’ll look to bounce back here at home.
Sophomore back Jaydn Ott scored for the fifth time in seven games, and he leads Cal in rushing yards (848).
Junior wideout Jeremiah Hunter caught five passes or more in each of the first four games, and he’s first on the team in receptions (21) and receiving yards (232).
The Cal defense has allowed 27.7 points per game.
Washington State vs California Trends
WAZZU is 4-5 against the spread, with a 5-4 O/U record.
CAL is 3-6 ATS, with a 6-3 over/under record.
Corey’s Free Pick
Okay, so what happened at Washington State lingered into one of the nastier games of the season in a loss to Stanford, and I don’t know how one can warrant trusting this team at this point. Five straight losses and a different Cam Ward have cast a cloud on Wazzu’s season, and although Cal just got blitzed by Oregon, they nearly beat USC the week prior, and they’ve been better over the past five weeks. Honestly, hard to trust either side here, so while I support rolling with the home team, I like the Under for this final Pac-12 matchup.
