The Old Dominion Monarchs will make the in-state trip to Lynchburg to meet the Liberty Flames this weekend from Williams Stadium.

Old Dominion Monarchs Preview

Old Dominion moved to 4-5 after losing to Coastal Carolina in Norfolk by four, 28-24. The Monarchs gave up a last second touchdown to drop below .500, and they’ll look to get back into the win column this weekend. The ODU offense is scoring 23.5 ppg, while passing for 198.5 ypg, rushing for 151.7 ypg, and converting 37.2% of their third downs.

ODU Player Notes

Grant Wilson played well despite the final result versus Coastal Carolina, passing for 173 yards and three scores. The former Fordham quarterback hasn’t turned the ball over in four games, but he may have to take some shots this weekend when facing Liberty. Wilson has passed for 1,475 yards with 13 touchdowns to five interceptions thru eight games.

Junior back Kadarius Calloway had a big game against Marshall, and he leads the team in rushing with 354 yards on 28 touches.

Sophomore wideout Kelby Williams leads ODU in receptions (14) and receiving yards (338).

The ODU defense has allowed 26.1 points per game.

Liberty Flames Preview

Liberty climbed to 9-0 after defeating Louisiana Tech at home, 56-30. The Flames scored multiple touchdowns in each quarter, and they’ll look bring that same energy this weekend with ODU in town. The Liberty offense is scoring 37.0 ppg, while passing for 207.8 ypg, rushing for 280.6 ypg, and converting 46.3% of their third downs.

Liberty Player Notes

Kaidon Salter had another strong dual threat outing, going 10/15 for 169 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 117 yards and another score. The sophomore quarterback has taken a big step forward this season, and he’ll look to keep rolling here at home. Salter has thrown for 1,662 passing yards with 19 touchdowns to three interceptions, and he’s rushed 614 yards and seven scores through eight games.

Wake transfer Quinton Cooley has found the endzone in four straight games, and after going for 100 yards or more in four of the last five contests, he leads the team with 802 rushing yards on 139 carries.

Junior CJ Daniels has caught a touchdown pass in three of the previous four games, and he leads LU in receptions (27) and receiving yards (576)

The LU defense is allowing 20.8 points per game.

Louisiana Tech vs Liberty Trends

ODU is 3-6 against the spread, with a 4-5 O/U record.

LU is 6-2 ATS, with a 4-4 over/under record.

Nothing like a quality, in-state non-conference matchup this late in the season, and while ODU may have intentions of spoiling another undefeated school within the state, they might come up empty handed for the second time in three weeks. The Monarchs came very close to hanging a blemish on JMU in Harrisonburg, but they came up just a bit short, and that’s been a theme for this season. Old Dominion’s only double digit loss came a few miles further in Blacksburg to Virginia Tech, so while they may be able to keep things close with Liberty, I do believe the Flames will walk out of Saturday still undefeated. ODU’s peskiness this season is noted, so I like targeting the Under here, as this will a run-based game, and could come down to matter of fourth quarter stops.
