The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will head down to Dallas to face the SMU Mustangs in AAC play this weekend from Gerald J. Ford Stadium on ESPNU. SMU and Tulsa have an extended rivalry, dating back to their time in the WAC, and they’ve faced off in every season since 1996. SMU leads the all-time series, 16-13, after winning last year’s meeting on the road, 45-34.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane Preview
Tulsa fell to 3-4 after losing to Rice at home, 42-10. The Golden Hurricane were outmatched from the jump, and they’ll face another uphill battle with a Texan school here with SMU. The Tulsa offense is scoring 23.7 ppg, while passing for 184.4 ypg, rushing for 188.7 ypg, and converting 44.3% of their third downs.
Tulsa Player Notes
• Cardell Williams may not be able to go this weekend after being pulled from the Rice matchup, and Braylon Braxton may be called upon. The Frisco native threw an interception last week, but he did manage to gain 89 yards on the ground, and he’ll look to show what he can do if he gets the nod.
• Anthony Watkins will be coming home for this contest, and after being held to a season-low 29 yards against Rice, he’ll look to bounce back. The Fort Worth native leads Tulsa in rushing with 396 yards on 104 touches.
• Freshman wideout Devan Williams leads the team in receptions (22) and receiving yards (315).
• The Tennessee defense is allowing 31.1 points per game.
SMU Mustangs Preview
SMU improved to 5-2 after shutting out Temple in Philly, 55-0. The Mustangs embarrassed the Owls on their home turf, and they’ll look to close the month strong in their homecoming game. The SMU offense is scoring 36.4 ppg, while passing for 273.4 ypg, rushing for 164.6 ypg, and converting 42.6% of their third downs.
SMU Player Notes
• Preston Stone had one of his best games of the season, passing for 300 yards and two scores against Temple. The Dallas native has put a rough road loss to TCU behind him, and he’ll look to deliver winning results for the fourth time in a row this weekend. Stone has passed for 1,767 yards with 16 touchdowns to five interceptions this season.
• Miami transfer Jaylan Knighton found the endzone last weekend versus the Owls, and he leads SMU in rushing yards (422).
• Jake Bailey caught six passes in the win over Temple, and he leads SMU in receptions (26) and receiving yards (294).
