The San Jose State Spartans will head down to Albuquerque to meet the New Mexico Lobos in Mountain West play this Saturday from University Stadium on the MWN. San Jose State holds the head-to-head series lead, 14-5-1, after winning the most recent matchup back on Halloween of 2020, 38-21.

San Jose State Spartans Preview

San Jose State dropped to 1-5 after losing to Boise on the blue turf by eight, 35-27. The Spartans jumped out to a fast start, but they were unable to hold off the Broncos, and they’ll look to avoid a fourth straight loss this weekend. The SJSU offense is scoring 28.0 ppg, while passing for 237.8 ypg, rushing for 130.0 ypg, and converting 38.7% of their third downs.

SJSU Player Notes

Chevan Cordeiro had another solid performance in a losing effort last week in Boise, passing for a season-best 325 yards, with a rushing touchdown and a pick. The senior quarterback has been unable to replicate last season’s success, and he’ll now look to avoid taking a fourth straight road loss this weekend. Cordeiro has thrown for 1,346 yards, with six touchdowns to three interceptions thru six starts.

• Senior back Kairee Robinson has found the endzone in all five of his games this season, and he leads SJSU in rushing with 347 yards on 58 carries.

• Junior wideout Nick Nash tallied a season-high 99 yards in the loss to the Broncos, and he leads the Spartans with splits of 29/333/3.

• The SJSU defense has allowed 33.7 points per game.

New Mexico Lobos Preview

New Mexico comes in at 2-3 after losing to Wyoming in Laramie by nine, 35-26.  The Lobos had their rally cut short by the Cowboys, and they’ll look to get back to .500 here at home. The UNM offense is scoring 28.6 ppg, while passing for 210.6 ypg, rushing for 180.4 ypg, and converting 44.8% of their third downs.

UNM Player Notes

Dylan Hopkins struggled through the air again last week against Wyoming, going 14/30 for 151 yards with a touchdown and a pick. The former UAB quarterback hasn’t been able to find much success outside of a lopsided win over Tennessee Tech, and he’ll attempt to figure things out against a veteran SJSU defense. Hopkins has passed for 978 yards, with seven touchdowns to three interceptions thru five games.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt surpassed the 100-yard mark for the third time this season, and he leads UNM in rushing yards (431) and touchdowns (7).

• Senior wideout Jeremiah Hixon scored twice in the loss to Wyoming, and he leads the team in catches (17) with 136 receiving yards, despite playing just three games.

• The UNM defense has allowed 31.0 points per game.

San Jose State vs New Mexico Trends

SJSU is 4-2 against the spread, with a 5-1 O/U record.

UNM is 3-2 ATS, with a 4-1 over/under record.

Corey’s Free Pick

San Jose State’s scheduling of two Pac-12 programs and a tough MAC school in Toledo may have been profitable, but backfired on them during the non-conference slate, which has left a stain on their record. Despite the slow start in FBS matchups, the Spartans come into a spot to turn things around against an inferior New Mexico team. Veteran QB Chevan Cordeiro should have a strong performance, and the Lobos inability to push the ball through the air will leave the door open for SJSU to get back into the win column. Back San Jose State for this Mountain West contest, and give the Under a look as well.
