The Texas Tech Red Raiders will make the trip to Laramie to meet the Wyoming Cowboys in non-conference play from War Memorial Stadium. Wyoming surprisingly leads this matchup, 3-2, but they haven’t faced off since 1992, in a contest Texas Tech won by three scores.

Texas Tech Red Raiders Preview

Texas Tech went 8-5 last season, with a 5-4 record in Big 12 play, and wrapped it up with a Texas Bowl victory over Ole Miss. The Red Raiders improved by one win in Joey McGuire’s first season, and there’s optimism more improvements will be made here in 2023. Texas Tech scored 34.2 points per game, while passing for 302.5 yards per game, and rushing for 158.9 ypg last season.

Behren Morton and Tyler Shough return after splitting time at the quarterback spot last season. Morton passed for 1,117 yards, with seven touchdowns to six interceptions before going down in the TCU game. Shough opened 2022 as the starter, before finishing the season behind center and totaling 1,062 passing yards with six touchdowns to three picks.

Tahj Brooks returns in the backfield after a solid junior season that saw him rush for 601 yards on 133 carries, and seven scores.

• TTU brings back a solid trio of wideouts in seniors Myles Price and Xavier White, and transfer Drae McCray

• White caught 42 passes for 561 yards, while Price brought in an identical line of 48 catches for 478 yards. McCray led Austin Peay in receiving from the slot with 76 receptions, 1022 yards, and nine touchdowns, and he will more than likely line up in the same spot in Lubbock.

• The Texas Tech defense allowed 29.2 ppg in 2022.

Wyoming Cowboys Preview

Wyoming went 7-6 last season, with a 5-3 record in Mountain West play. The Cowboys improved by three wins in conference play last season, and they’ll look to raise some eyebrows this weekend against TTU. Wyoming scored 21.2 points per game, while passing for 132.2 yards per game, and rushing for 181.4 ypg in 2022.

Andrew Peasley returns behind center, and he may face competition from Evan Svoboda and Jayden Clemons early on. Peasley’s got the seniority advantage, and he passed for 1,388 yards with nine touchdowns to eight interceptions thru eleven starts last season.

Harrison Waylee and Dawaiian McNeely will likely lead the backfield. Waylee had a nice season for Northern Illinois in 2022, surpassing the 100-yard mark in five straight games, and finishing with 1,018 rushing yards and five touchdowns. McNeely rushed for 356 yards in spot duty for the run-heavy Cowboys last season.

• Wyoming doesn’t pass much, but they do return fifth-year wideout Wyatt Wieland, who caught 21 passes for 289 receiving yards last year.

• The Wyoming defense allowed 23.2 ppg last season.

Corey’s Free Pick

Texas Tech opening the season in Laramie versus Lubbock for this matchup is interesting, but we should be in for the same result. The Red Raiders made strides with stability in the leadership department last season, and if they manage to find that same reliability at the quarterback position, we may see even more improvement here in 2023. Wyoming is hard-nosed squad, but they may be in over there head here with TTU. I like having the push on the margin, but let’s take the Over for this non-conference matchup, as the Red Raiders may be able to handle the heavy lifting here on the road.

The pick in this article is the opinion of the writer, not a PickDawgz site consensus.
