The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and UCLA Bruins face off on Saturday in a Week 1 college football showdown at the Rose Bowl.
This is the Grayson McCall Show
Grayson McCall is back for another year with Coastal Carolina and the expectation is that he’s going to have a big season. Last season he dealt with injuries but he still threw for 2700 yards, 24 touchdowns, and two interceptions. There should also be a ton of running with many different running backs. Out wide the star of the show is Sam Pinckney who caught 71 passes last season. On defense the big issue for Coastal Carolina was with the secondary and that will need to be improved upon. If the secondary struggles in this game, it’s going to be a very long game for Coastal Carolina.
Coastal Carolina Betting Preview
- Coastal Carolina has won each of its last 10 September games against non-AP-ranked teams.
- Coastal Carolina has failed to cover the spread in each of its last three games as an underdog.
- Four of Coastal Carolina's last five games against non-conference opponents have gone OVER the total points line.
How Long Can Ethan Garbers Keep the Job?
UCLA had a quarterback battle heading into the season but Ethan Garbers has won the job. He is very comfortable with this system, but he might not be the best quarterback on the team. Dante Moore is only a freshman but many expect him to be the next great UCLA quarterback. This is Garbers job for now, but he might need to be looking over his shoulder, because Moore is sitting right there. On defense this UCLA team has a lot of question marks, and this isn’t exactly the team you want to face when you are having defensive issues.
UCLA Betting Preview
- UCLA has won seven of its last eight games in September.
- UCLA has failed to cover the spread in each of its last four games.
- Four of UCLA's last five games against non-conference opponents at Rose Bowl have gone OVER the total points line.
Shane’s Free Pick
It wouldn’t shock me a bit if Coastal Carolina won this game outright. McCall is good under center and he’s going to make the smart decisions. This UCLA defense is going to struggle this season, and Coastal Carolina is going to make them pay. I also think UCLA is making a mistake starting Garbers here. UCLA will score, but this isn’t a game where they are going to score 40 points, and Coastal Carolina is going to stick around. Back Coastal Carolina to cover the spread.
