The Tennessee Volunteers will take the three-hour trip west to Nashville and take on the Vanderbilt Commodores from First Bank Stadium on the SEC Network. Tennessee and Vanderbilt have faced off in every season since 1900, with the Volunteers holding a massive 78-33 all-time series lead.
Tennessee dropped to 9-2 after falling to South Carolina in Columbia in Week 12. The Volunteers were blindly blitzed by the Gamecocks, surrendering 63 points and falling to SC by 25. Tennessee scores 30.7 points per game, while passing for 348.8 yards per game (5th), and rushing for 191.5 ypg (61st). The Tennessee defense allows 25.6 points per game.
Rocky Top lost more than their CFB Playoff hopes last weekend. Hendon Hooker’s ACL injury will close an eventful career spent between the Bristol’s, and halt a potential Heisman trophy run. Hooker will finish his college career with a magical 8024 passing yards with 71 touchdowns to just ten interceptions, and 1,862 rushing yards and 24 more scores through 41 appearances. Former Big Blue QB Joe Milton III has been solid in relief for Hooker over the past two seasons, and he will get the call here.
Jabari Small and Jaylen Wright split the load for the Vols. Wright still maintains the team-lead after last weekend and he’s up to 626 rushing yards and eight scores for the season. Small has been the workhorse since the start of SEC play, and he’s gained 617 rushing yards while scoring ten touchdowns. Jalin Hyatt has enjoyed a stellar junior season, turning into a star right before our eyes. He among SEC leaders with 64 receptions, 1,181 receiving yards, and 15 touchdowns. USC transfer Bru McCoy (48/619/3) and Cedric Tillman (37/417/3) gave the Vols one of the best wideout cores in the nation with Hooker.
Vanderbilt improved to 5-6 after defeating Florida in Nashville in Week 12.. The Commodores added more misery to the Gators season by hanging an embarrassing loss on them as 14-point underdogs. Vanderbilt scores 26.8 points per game, while passing for 194.6 yards per game (204th), and rushing for 161.1 ypg (118th). The Vandy defense allows 36.6 points per game.
Mike Wright’s last two starts have all but locked him in for the starting role next season. The junior quarterback gained 310 yards in the road win over Kentucky, and he tossed three touchdowns against Florida last weekend. Wright is up to 946 passing yards, with 12 touchdowns to four interceptions and 467 rushing yards with five more scores.
Ray Davis has been a big part of Vandy’s recent success. After going for a career-high against SC, the senior back has eclipsed the 130-yard mark in both wins. solid for Vandy out of the backfield this year. Davis leads the Commodores with 982 rushing yards and eight total touchdowns (5 rush, 3rec). Will Sheppard leads Vandy in receptions (54), receiving yards (728), and nine touchdowns.
It’s laughably disturbing how much the signs point towards Vandy somehow covering at home, but how much can you really trust the momentum of one team?
Vandy somehow has a chance to be profitable one final time, and with bowl eligibility on the line, them holding the fort and covering the home underdog spread again doesn’t feel unrealistic. I can hear Skip Bayless pounding the table now, but I refuse to write off Josh Heupel’s squad when they’re down.
Despite last weekend’s result, the Volunteers still have something to play for Saturday. This will mark the final time this group of seniors for both sides play in front of their home state, and bragging rights will be on the line within the Top. With a 10-win season on the line, and a New Years’ Six bowl in sight, trust the Vols to bounce back here in Nashville.
