The Army Black Knights will fly up to Amherst and take on the UMass Minutemen from Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium this weekend on ESPN+. Army and UMass have faced off four times, with the Cadets winning each meeting including last years matchup, 33-17.
Army improved to 5-6 with a win over UConn in West Point. The Cadets wore the Huskies down, and pulled away with a dominant second half, saving their season along the way. Army scores 27.9 points per game, while passing for 82.5 yards per game (292nd), and rushing for 301.9 ypg (4th).
Army has rotated between Jemel Jones and Tyhier Tyler at quarterback. Jones has found the end zone in four straight games since returning to the lineup, rushing for 307 yards and passing for 250 more with seven rushing scores.
Tyler leads the team in rushing with 500 yards and nine total touchdowns (2 pass, 9 rush) after strong showings versus Troy and UConn. Tyson Riley leads the backfield stable with 435 rushing yards.
UMass dropped to 1-10 after losing to Texas A&M in College Station in Week 12. The Minutemen frustrated Aggie fans with a competitive first half and ultimate made use of their points for the third weekend in a row in the 20-3 defeat. Massachusetts scores 14.1 points per game, while passing for 114.3 yards per game (282nd), and rushing for 154.3 ypg (134th). The UMass defense allows 29.9 points per game.
It’s been a revolving door at the quarterback position for UMass, but Brady Olson looks slated to make his fifth start of the season. The sophomore quarterback naturally struggled at A&M last weekend, but he threw for 266 yards against UConn, which marked a season-high as a unit.
Ellis Merriweather had a big game against Arkansas State, dashing for a season-high 122 yards and two scores. Merriweater leads the team with 526 yards on 145 carries. George Johnson leads UMass in receiving with 26 catches for 364 yards, while Penn State transfer Cameron Sullivan-Brown went off for a season-high 124 yards versus UConn.
UMass has done a valiant effort against the spread this season, but how well they deal with the Army ground attack remains to be seen. It’s very unlikely the Minutemen are able match the Black Knights physicality, especially with bowl eligibility on the line for the visitors.
A win for the Cadets means they go into their annual Army/Navy game with a chance to become bowl eligible for the sixth time in seven seasons, so look for them to tune up and stay sharp with a dominant victory here. Take Army’s spread Saturday.
