The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will travel south and take on the Charlotte 49ers from Jerry Richardson Stadium on CBSS. WKU and Charlotte have faced off in each of the past five seasons, with the Hilltoppers holding a 4-1 series lead.
Western Kentucky dropped to 5-4 after falling to North Texas at home in Week 9. Three fourth quarter touchdowns stunned the Hiltoppers at home, as the Mean Green won the quarterback battle of Austin’s last weekend to hop WKU in the Conference USA standing. Western Kentucky scores 34.8 points per game, while passing for 317.7 yards per game (18th), and rushing for 143.9 ypg (132nd). The WKU defense allows 24.2 points per game.
Austin Reed will make his tenth start of the season. The senior quarterback has struggled a bit over the past two weeks, but this matchup with Charlotte will provide an opportunity to get back on track with a late season opportunity to upset Auburn looming on the radar. Reed has thrown for 2,762 passing yards with 22 touchdowns to six interceptions this season.
Kye Robichaux leads the Hiltoppers in rushing with 458 yards, but he’s missed the last two games and his status remains in the air for this one. L.T. Sanders (what a name) has been explosive during his absence, going for 120 yards in the win over UAB. Malachi Corley and Daewood Davis both rank among the nation’s leading receivers. Corley has been very consistent, and he leads WKU in receptions (58), receiving yards (701) and touchdowns (6). Davis has posted a similar line of 52 catches for 699 yards and five scores. Akron transfer Michael Mathison has been effective out of the slot and he has 39 catches for 404 yards.
Charlotte improved to 2-7 after beating Rice in Houston in Week 9. The 49ers exploded for a season 56 points, and picked up the 15-point underdog victory, and hopping into the conference win column Charlotte is scoring 27.3 points per game, while passing for 276.1 yards per game (56th) and rushing for 108.9 ypf (235th) . The 49er defense gives up 27.3 points per game.
Western Kentucky is 6-3 against the spread this season, with a 1-2 record on the road. Charlotte is 2-7 against the spread this season, with a 0-4 record at home. The under went 6-2 in both schools games during October.
Western Kentucky should jump back into the win column here, but which Charlotte team is going to come out Saturday? The Niners manhandled Rice last week, and while it’s very unlikely they handle Western Kentucky like that, they come back to the Queen City with a bit of momentum.
Aside from the somewhat steep three-score margin, the magic number on this bout is a bit high. A slow start or snoozing ending instantly puts the massive total of 72 in jeopardy, and with minor showers set to be on tap in the Carolina’s, it could alter both of these pass-heavy offenses’ approach. Let’s put these two schools to the test, and take the under for this Conference USA bout.
