The Oregon State Beavers will head to Seattle and take on the Washington Huskies this Friday from Husky Stadium on ESPN2. These two schools have crossed paths in nearly every year since 1902, with Washington holding a 67-35 all-time series lead.
Oregon State improved to 6-2 after defeating Colorado at home in Week 9. The Beavers overpowered the Buffaloes, leading by up to 32 at one point, and covering the massive 22-point spread. Oregon State is scoring 32.7 points per game, while passing for 230.1 yards per game (140th), and rushing for 194.9 ypg (56th). The OSU defense allows 22.7 points per game.
Ben Gulbranson led the Beavers to their third straight win, and there’s optimism in Corvallis heading into the final month of the season. The true freshman was solid in another winning effort, tossing a pair of touchdowns and playing turnover-free football. Gulbranson has passed for 818 yards with five touchdowns to three interceptions through his first five college appearances.
The Beavers have moved through three backs this season, with true freshman Damien Martinez starting to pull away with the keys. After gaining 111 yards in the win over Wazzu, Martinez set a new career-high in the win over Colorado with 178 yards and three touchdowns. It’s the type of performance that should hand him the lead role the rest of the season, and he leads OSU with 517 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Tre’shaun Harrison will look to make some noise in his return home to Seattle, and he leads the team in receptions (34) and receiving yards (477).
Washington improved to 6-2 after defeating Cal in Berkeley back in Week 8. The Huskies prevailed after an eventful second half with the Golden Bears, and escaped with a seven-point victory. Washington is scoring 40.7 points per game, while passing for 379.3 yards per game (3rd), and rushing for 128.5 ypg (192nd). The UW defense allows 27.7 points per game.
Michael Penix Jr. has found a new home in Seattle. The former Indiana quarterback has surpassed the 300-yard mark every time out, he’s one of the best signal callers in the nation. Penix put season-highs up against Arizona, passing for 516 yards and four touchdowns. He’s among the nation’s leaders with 2,934 passing yards with 22 touchdowns to four interceptions.
Wayne Taulapapa came over from UVA’s Air Raid, so he understands most of the concepts and lack of rushing opportunities that come with it. The senior back set a season-high with 120 yards versus Stanford, and he’s gained 60 yards in each game since. Taulapapa is up to 449 rushing yards, 20 catches, and five touchdowns for the season. Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan have been Penix’s favorite targets thus far. Odunze had four straight performances of 115 yards or more, and he leads UW in receptions (50) and receiving yards (756). McMillan has been steady, hauling in four or more passes in all eight games, and totaling 45 catches for 611 yards.
Oregon State is 6-2 against the spread this season, with a 1-2 record on the road. Washington is 3-5 against the spread this season, with a 2-3 record at home. The over is 6-2 in Huskies games this season.
This Friday night matchup will put the host in a manageable position. Penix has performed admirably this season, and the host will come into this one with a distinct advantage at quarterback. Gulbranson has played well for a true freshman, but this will mark his toughest start yet, and the hostile Husky stadium crowd will surely make him uncomfortable. UW has the firepower to over match OSU here at home on both sides of the ball, so take their spread confidently this Friday.
