Toledo will travel to Ypsilanti and take on Eastern Michigan from Rynearson Stadium this Saturday on ESPNU. Toledo and Eastern Michigan have faced off in every season since 1977, and this will mark their 50th meeting. Toledo leads the all-time seies 36-13, but EMU won last year’s meeting in a shootout, 52-49.
Toledo dropped to 5-3 after losing to Buffalo in Week 8. The Rockets controlled most of the football game, but they fell to the Bulls after being outscored 24-0 in the fourth quarter. Toledo is scoring 37.1 points per game, while passing for 213.2 yards per game (185th), and rushing for 194.3 ypg (57th). The Toledo defense is allowing 27.2 points per game.
Dequan Finn will definitely look to bounce back after a tough weekend in Buffalo. The sophomore quarterback got off to a good start, but a rough, turnover-filled fourth quarter led to Toledo’s first MAC loss. Finn was flawless in three previous conference games, tossing 11 touchdowns to no interceptions. He’s up to 1,637 passing yards with 18 touchdowns to nine interceptions, and he leads Toledo with 520 rushing yards and eight scores.
Jacquez Stuart surpassed the 100-yard mark for the second time last weekend. Stuart now paces the backfield with 461 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Jerjuan Newton has been Finn’s number one target this season, leading Toledo with 29 catches, 519 receiving yards, and six touchdowns.
Eastern Michigan is 5-3 after defeating Ball State in a battle of birds in Week 8. The Eagles jumped back into the win column with a strong fourth quarter in Muncie, shutting the Cardinals out en route to picking up an underdog victory. EMU is averaging 27.4 points per game, while passing for 217.0 yards per game (174th) and rushing for 140.3 ypg (160th). The Eagle defense gives 30.6 up points per game.
Austin Smith got the start over Taylor Powell last weekend, and will likely lead the Eagles into this one. The sophomore quarterback brings more of a dual-threat ability to the position, and he played turnover-free football in the win over Ball State. Smith has passed for 569 yards with four touchdowns to three interceptions, and he’s rushed for 218 yards and two scores.
Samson Evans has really been effective this season. The senior back rushed for a school record 258 yards in one of their biggest wins in school history over Arizona State in Tempe. Evans scored three times in the win over Western Michigan and after missing last weekend, his status for Saturday will be worth monitoring for this one. Evans is among MAC leaders with 630 rushing yards and six touchdowns through seven games. Tanner Knue has 27 catches for a team-leading 386 receiving yards. Hassan Beydoun led EMU in receiving last season, and he broke out for a 10-catch performance versus Ball State.
Toledo is 4-3 against the spread this season, with a 1-3 record on the road. Eastern Michigan is 4-4 against the spread this season, with a 1-3 record at home. The over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
Toledo was off to such a great start in conference play prior to the fourth quarter of last week’s game. It was uncharacteristic of Jason Candle’s team, and they’ll have plenty of motivation coming into this one. A bounce back effort from the Rockets and a rebound performance from quarterback Dequan Finn feel likely here, and Toledo should lay the points.
