Boston College will travel to Hartford and take on UConn this Saturday on CBSS. UConn and Boston College were former Big East rivals, and have met on twelve occasions, with BC winning each matchup.
Boston College fell to 2-5 after losing to Wake Forest in Week 8. BC struck first but ultimately took a tumble in Winston-Salem, failing to capitalize on the 20-point spread. Boston College is scoring 19.4 points per game, while passing for 239.6 yards per game (121st), and rushing for 67.4 ypg (263rd). The BC defense is allowing 31.1 points per game.
Third-year starter Phil Jurkovec leads the charge for BC. That experience alone somewhat protects a bad loss to UConn here, but he’ll have to continue playing turnover-free football. Jurkovec has thrown for 1,556 passing yards with eleven touchdowns to six interceptions through five starts.
Boston College passes 70% of the time, leaving little opportunity for Pat Garwo to repeat last year’s 1,000-yard performance. The junior back leads BC with 257 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Zay Flowers continues to be a difference maker for the Golden Eagles. After leading BC in receiving for the past two seasons, the senior wideout is on pace to do so for a third straight year after a big 10-catch, 135-yard performance versus Wake last weekend. Flowers is among ACC leads with 52 receptions for 691 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
UConn is 3-5 after a loss to Ball State in Week7. UConn squandered a double-digit lead at halftime, but still managed to cover for the fourth straight game. Jim Mora has made Huskies both profitable and competent this season. Connecticut is averaging 18.1 points per game, while passing for 103.4 yards per game (285th) and rushing for 185.9 ypg (66th). The UConn defense gives up 29.7 points per game.
Zion Turner is one of the few true freshmen in the nation starting at quarterback, so there’s been a lot of reserved play calling. It’s been a nice two weeks for Turner after leading UConn to their first pair of FBS wins in three seasons, and he tossed a pair of touchdowns versus Ball State last weekend. Turner has thrown for 790 yards with seven touchdowns to four interceptions and 134 rushing yards through eight starts.
The Huskies have leaned on the ground game heavily this season. After losing lead backs Nathan Carter and Devontae Houston to injuries, Victor Rosa has stepped up in the backfield. The freshman back scored twice in the win over FIU, and led the team in rushing last weekend. Rosa has rushed for 265 yards and four scores through seven appearances. Ironically, Zion Turner’s favorite target is Aaron Turner, and he leads the team with 31 receptions for 275 receiving yards
Boston College is 1-6 against the spread this season, with a 0-3 record on the road. UConn is 6-2 against the spread this season, with a 4-1 record on the road. The over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
The slight revelation in Hartford has been really nice to see. The Huskies should no longer be viewed as a free win, and what they’ve been able to do against the spread this season has been special.
Boston College has been subpar versus the spread this season, and trusting to cover any margin is difficult to do. There’s been little pulse of life since catching Louisville slipping without Malik Cunningham, and it remains to be seen how they fare on the road this weekend.
Jim Mora’s got something good going at UConn, and I like spotting them the points here versus their former Big East rivals.
