Georgia Southern will travel to Norfolk and take on Old Dominion this weekend from Kornblau Field. Georgia Southern won both of the meetings back in 2011 and 2012,

Georgia Southern is 4-3 after a big time win over James Madison in Week 7. The Eagles would spoil JMU’s season by handing them their first loss at the FBS level, 45-38. Georgia Southern is scoring 38.1 points per game, while passing for 358.7 yards per game (6th), and rushing for 147.1 ypg (141st). The Eagle defense allows 31.4 points per game.

Kyle Vantrease is the engineer to Clay Helton’s Air Raid attack. The Buffalo transfer led the Eagles to their biggest win in school history over Nebraska, and he played the game of his life last weekend versus JMU, passing for a career-high 578 yards and four touchdowns. Vantrease is among the nation’s leaders with 2,511 passing yards, with 17 touchdowns to 12 interceptions.

Georgia Southern indulges in the pass-first approach, but Jalen White has capitalized on his opportunities on the ground this season. The junior back scored twice in each of the first three games, and he ran for a season-high 144 yards against Coastal Carolina. White leads the Eagles with 541 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Four wideouts have caught 30 passes or more this season. Khaleb Hood leads the group in receptions (46) and receiving yards (560) after coming alive over the past two games. Derwin Burgess has done damage out of the slow and he’s right behind him with 44 catches, 537 yards, and a team-lead five touchdowns. Jeremy Singleton (40/452/2) has posted a strong line himself, and hit the 100-yard mark in each of the last two games.

Old Dominion is 3-3 after a big upset road victory over Coastal Carolina in Week 7. ODU came out of their bye as 12-point underdogs, and came through with a 28-point win over CCU.

Old Dominion is averaging 26.2 points per game, while passing for 242.2 yards (123rd) per game and rushing for 113.4 ypg (224th) . The ODU defense gives up 26.2 points per game, while allowing yards per game.

Hayden Wolff has produced well since leading ODU to its second upset win over Virginia Tech. The sophomore quarterback has tossed for multiple touchdowns in each game since, and he’s thrown for 1,431 yards with 11 touchdowns to two interceptions on the season. Blake Watson had a career day versus Coastal Carolina, going for 256 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Watson now leads ODU with 511 yards and four scores. Ali Jennings III has been a star since coming over from WVU. After recording 1,066 yards in his first season in Norfolk, the junior wideout is on pace to surpass that number this year, and leads ODU with 32 receptions and 688 receiving yards.

Georgia Southern is 5-2 against the spread this season, with a 2-2 record on the road. The over is 5-1 in Eagles last 6 conference games. ODU is 3-3 ATS this season, with a 1-2 record at home.

Wow, the Fun Belt somehow got even better last weekend, after providing a pair of upset specials on Saturday. ODU and Georgia Southern picked up big wins within the conference, shifting the flow of the Sun Belt East. The Monarch’s sit atop the talented division, and must somehow follow up arguably their biggest win of the season. A lot of pressure will come with that, and how well they can contain this aerial attack remains to be seen.

We could see a lot of points in this one, but I love what the visitors have going offensively right now. As a Virginian, it always hurts to sway against the state, especially after what Georgia Southern did to JMU last weekend, but I like their chances here again. Take Georgia Southern’s ML here.
