Stanford will travel to South Bend to take on Notre Dame this Saturday on NBC. These two schools have faced off in every season since 1988, and the Irish lead the all-time series 21-13 after winning the last three meetings.
Stanford is 1-4 after losing to Oregon State in Week 6. The Cardinal couldn’t hold off a late rally from the Beavers, and dropped their fourth game in a row. Stanford is averaging 29.2 points per game, while passing for 261.6 yards per game (76th), and rushing for 138.6 ypg (165th). The Stanford defense allows 32.8 points per game.
Tanner McKee played his best game of the season last time out, but it still wasn’t enough. The junior quarterback will have a tough time fixing anything this weekend in South Bend, but he did perform well against them last season, McKee has thrown for 1,249 passing yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions on the season. Casey Filkins leads the team in rushing after an injury to E.J. Smith with 339 yards. Michael Wilson and Elijah Higgins have been solid on the outside. Higgins leads the team with 19 receptions, while Wilson has provided big play ability, and leads Stanford with 352 receiving yards.
Notre Dame is 3-2 after defeating BYU in Week 6. Notre Dame won the clash of Independents behind their best all-around effort all season, out gaining BYU 496-276. Notre Dame is averaging 25.6 points per game, while passing for 219.8 yards per game (168th), and rushing for 174.8 ypg (78th). The Notre Dame defense allows 23.2 points per game.
Drew Pyne has brought life to the Notre Dame offense. The sophomore quarterback tossed for three touchdowns in both wins over UNC and BYU, and he’s passed for 721 yards in three starts. Audric Estime and Chris Tyree have split the load this season. Estime has picked it up with Pyne in the lineup, rushing for a career-high 134 yards versus UNC, and leading ND with 361 rushing yards. Tyree has added 231 yards rushing and 14 catches. Michael Mayer has been dynamic from the tight end position this season, and he leads the Irish with 33 receptions for 351 receiving yards and five scores after a big game against BYU.
Stanford is 1-4 against the spread this season, with a 0-2 record on the road. The Cardinal are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 meetings. The over is 5-0 in Cardinal last 5 vs. a team with a winning record. Notre Dame is 2-3 ATS this season, with an 0-3 record at home.
One of Notre Dame’s fiercest rivals could give them a test here, as Stanford keeps inching closer and closer to a win. While it’s unlikely the Cardinal end the Fighting Irish’s current momentum, they’ve managed to score 22 or more each time out this season. Stanford could make use of this 17-point spread, but the total is a lot less risky here. The number is manageable, and with Notre Dame capable of doing the heavy lifting, I prefer it to the margin here. Take the over for this battle for the Legends Trophy.
