Old Dominion will travel to Conway and face Coastal Carolina from Brooks Stadium on ESPNU. This will mark the second time these two schools face off, with the Monarchs winning the first meeting back in 2012.
Old Dominion is 2-3 after a loss to in-state foe Liberty in Week 5. The Monarchs couldn’t contain the Flames run game, giving up a pair of 100-yard performances. ODU is averaging 21.6 points per game, while passing for 250.2 yards (90th) per game and rushing for 71.4 ypg (279th) . The ODU defense gives up 27.2 points per game.
Hayden Wolff has produced well since leading ODU to it’s second upset win over Virginia Tech. The sophomore quarterback has tossed for multiple touchdowns in each game since, and he’s thrown for 1,251 yards with nine touchdowns to two interceptions on the season. Blake Watson handles the majority of the ground work, and leads the Monarchs with 255 yards rushing. Ali Jennings III has been a star since coming over from WVU. After recording 1,066 yards in his first season in Norfolk, the junior wideout is on pace to surpass that number this year, and leads ODU with 32 receptions and 688 receiving yards.
Coastal Carolina is 6-0 after defeating Louisana Monroe in Week 6, after jumping out to a 14-point halftime lead. Coastal Carolina is averaging 35.1 points per game, while passing for 269.2 yards per game (69th) and rushing for 189.8 ypg . The CCU defense gives up 26.2 points per game.
Grayson McCall is having another fantastic season for the Chanticleers, and he has them heading into the second half of the season undefeated once again. McCall has thrown for 1,582 passing yards with 15 touchdowns to one interceptions through six starts this season. CJ Beasley has taken over the backfield after an injury to Reese White, and he leads the Coastal with 524 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Sam Pinckney and Jared Brown have been McCall’s favorite targets this season. Pinkney, a Georgia State transfer, leads CCU with 37 receptions for 510 receiving yards. Brown has provided a lot of big pay ability since the start of Sun Belt play, scoring in each of the three games, while catching 23 passes for 475 yards.
Old Dominion is 2-3 against the spread this season, with a 1-1 record on the road. ODU is 2-6 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. Coastal Carolina is 2-4 ATS this season, with an 0-3 record at home. CCU is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 conference games.
Coastal Carolina has a good chance of heading into their bye week 7-0, but they have really had a tough time covering these heavily favored margins this season. The Chanticleers are finishing games on the field, but they aren’t coming through on the books right now. Old Dominion hasn’t been that trustworthy themselves, but both of these teams do have the air attacks to put up some points here. Hayden Wolff has improved within the system this season, while Grayson McCall is one of the best in the nation. I like a shootout here for this Sun Belt battle, so take the over here.
