The Michigan Wolverines and Iowa Hawkeyes face off on Saturday in a Week 5 college football game at Kinnick Stadium. When these two teams faced off in 2021 it was Michigan that won 42-3.
The Wolverines come into this game with a 4-0 record and are highly ranked, but there is still a ton of questions about this team. After playing cupcakes the first three games, Iowa gave up 27 points to Maryland, and they were only able to win by seven points. Under center for the Wolverines is J.J. McCarthy and he completed 18 of his 26 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns in the last game against Maryland. Michigan this season is averaging 50 points while their defense is giving up 11 points per game. If the offense is good in this game, Michigan should be in good shape.
On the side of this matchup is Iowa who sit with a 3-1 record overall, but they haven’t been all that impressive in any of the games. Even in the last game against Rutgers, they scored 27 points, but there were two defensive TDs and the offense only scored 13 points. Iowa’s defense is giving up only 5.75 points per game which is 1st in the league, but the offense is averaging only 17 points per game. Under center for Iowa is Spencer Petras and he hasn’t been very dynamic. The running game hasn’t been as dynamic as years past. In this game, it’s going to need to be the defense that locks down because if Michigan is scoring, they aren’t going to be able to keep up.
Michigan is 5-1 against the spread in their last six road games. Iowa is 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games. Michigan is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games against Iowa.
Last year it was Michigan that won 42-3, and although I don’t think they will win by that many here, this is going to be an easy victory. I don’t trust Petras and the Iowa offense, and they won’t even reach 10 points in this game. Michigan will score at least 24 points here, and they will cover the spread. This is one of my favorite plays on the board.
