The Akron Zips and Tennessee Volunteers face off on Saturday in Week 3 college football showdown at Neyland Stadium.
Akron is still trying to rebuild their program but it looks like they still might be a few years off. In the first game of the season, it took overtime to beat Saint Francis, and in the last game against Michigan State, they were defeated 52-0. One issue for Akron is they haven’t had good quarterback play and until that happens they won’t really be competitive. In the last game Jeff Undercuffier completed 11 of his 22 passes for 80 yards. DJ Irons completed 9 of his 13 passes for 123 yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Running back Cam Wiley rushed 10 times for 30 yards. Wide receiver Daniel George caught four passes for 44 yards. In this game, if Akron wants any chance to win this game they are going to need the defense to step up in a big way.
,On the other side of this matchup is the Tennessee Volunteers who come into this game with a 2-0 record. In the first game, they beat Ball State 59-10 and in the last game against Pittsburgh it took overtime, but they were able to win 34-27. In the last game, Hendon Hooker completed 27 of his 42 passes for 325 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Cedric Tillman had nine receptions for 162 yards and a touchdown. Jalin Hyatt also had 11 catches for 73 yards. The defense in the last game wasn’t exactly lights out and they want to find success in this game, they are going to need the defense to step up.
Akron is 5-11 against the spread in their last 16 road games. Tennessee is 4-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games. The under is 9-2 in Akron’s last 11 games on grass.
This is a big number to cover, but I think Tennessee will do it. Akron scored zero in the last game and Tennessee has already proven they won’t take their foot off the gas. Look for Tennessee to put up close to 65 points here, and that is going to be the difference as the Volunteers get the job done. Back Tennessee against the spread.
Shane’s Pick Tennessee -47.5
