The Western Michigan Broncos and Ball State Cardinals face off on Saturday in a Week 2 college football showdown at Scheumann Stadium. When these two teams faced off in October of 2021 it was Ball State that secured the 45-20 victory.
Western Michigan had a tough test in their first game of the season and they were defeated 35-13 at the hands of Eastern Michigan. Western Michigan didn’t actually play that bad, but they just couldn’t find enough offense to keep the game close. Quarterback Jack Salopek completed 21 of his 36 passes for 193 yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Running back Sean Taylor had a good game rushing 13 times for 68 yards and a touchdown. In this game, Western Michigan is going to need the defense to be a whole lot better and put pressure on the Ball State offense.
On the other side of this matchup is Ball State who opened up their season against Tennessee, and it wasn’t a good game as they were defeated 59-10. The offense might have been a bit unlucky to only score 10 points, but their defense was awful giving up the 59 points. Quarterback John Paddock completed 27 of his 43 passes for 269 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Wide receiver Jayshon Jackson had a big game with five catches and 65 yards. The defense was a problem allowing over 350 yards through the air.
Western Michigan is 0-6 against the spread in their last six games against a team with a losing record. Ball State is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven home games. Western Michigan is 0-4 against the spread in their last four games against Ball State. The over is 5-1 in the last six meetings between the two teams,.
Western Michigan should find a ton of success moving the ball against Ball State’s defense and that is going to be the difference here. Ball State gave up 59 points in the first game of the season and although they might not give up that many here, it’s going to be enough for a comfortable victory for Western Michigan. Back Western Michigan against the spread.
Shane’s Pick Western Michigan -6.5
