The Iowa State Cyclones and Iowa Hawkeyes face off on Saturday in a Week 2 college football showdown for the Cy-Hawk Trophy at Kinnick Stadium.
Iowa State opened up the season against Southeast Missouri State and they were able to win 42-10. They gave up 10 points in the second quarter, but outside of that they were dominant in the victory. Hunter Dekkers is under center for Iowa State and he completed 25 of his 31 passes for 293 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. Running back Jirehl Brock rushed 16 times for 104 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson is clearly the favorite target and in Game 1 he caught eight passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns. In this game. Iowa State needs the defense to be strong.
On the other side of this matchup is Iowa who sits what a 1-0 record, but their first game was an ugly one. The offense only managed seven points against South Dakota State and they weren’t able to find the end zone. Quarterback Spencer Petras is going to need to play better or there will soon be calls for a quarterback change. In Game 1 he completed 11 of his 25 passes for 109 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. Running back Leshon Williams did have a nice game rushing 24 times for 72 yards. The defense was quite impressive in Game 1 and it’s clear that’s what they will have to lean on for success.
Iowa State is 7-3 against the spread in the last ten meetings in Iowa. The under is 12-3-1 in the last 16 meetings between the two teams. The under is 7-0 in the last seven meetings played between the two teams in Iowa.
This Iowa offense is awful, and it’s not going to get any easier in this game. Iowa might score more than seven points here, but not much more. Iowa’s defense was elite in the first game, and I don’t trust this Iowa State offense to find a whole lot of success scoring here. The trends point towards the under, and that’s exactly how this game will play out. Back the under to cash here.
