The FIU Panthers and Texas State Bobcats face off on Saturday in a Week 2 college football showdown at TSU Bobcat Stadium.
It might be a down year for FIU Panthers and even though the first year was a win, they looked really bad against Bryant. At halftime, FIU was down 16-6 but in the second half, they made a comeback and scored 24 points in the 4th quarter. It took overtime, but the Panthers were able to secure the 38-37. Quarterback Grayson James completed 16 of his 31 passes for 204 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Tyrese Chambers caught eight passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns. The defense in the first game looked horrible, and that will need to be cleaned up here.
On the other side of this matchup is the Texas State Bobcats and they opened up their season with a 38-14 record against Nevada. At the end of the first quarter, Texas State was down 14-0 and they never came back as they were blown out. Under center for Texas State is Layne Hatcher and he completed 33 of his 51 passes for 289 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. On offense, Texas State struggled to run the ball and they need a more balanced attack here. Texas State’s top wide receiver was Ashtyn Hawkins and he caught 10 passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
FIU was 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games against the Sun Belt. Texas State is 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 home games. The over is 16-5 in FIU’s last 21 games overall. The over is 4-1 in Texas State’s last five home games. The under is 5-2 in Texas State’s last seven games overall. The under is 5-2 in the Bobcats last 7 games following a straight-up loss of more than 20 points.
Texas State didn’t look in the first game, but they are still the much better team in this game. FIU’s defense gave up 37 points to Bryant, they might give up 65 points here to Texas State. Look for Texas State to run up the score and FIU is going to have no answer. Back Texas State against the spread.
