The Arizona Wildcats and San Diego State Aztecs face off on Saturday in a Week 1 college football showdown at Snapdragon Stadium.
The Arizona Wildcats 2021 season wasn’t a good one finishing with an 1-11 record overall and 1-8 during Pac-12 play. There isn’t a lot of buzz surrounding the Wildcats this season, but there maybe should be, because this is a team that should be much improved upon. Arizona hit the transfer portal hard, and the top two players are newcomers. Arizona brought in Washington State quarterback Jayden de Laura and wide receiver Jacob Cowing who played at UTEP. Last season Cowling caught 141 passes for nearly 2,600 yards and 13 touchdowns. On defense, there are a lot of questions but the one strength should be with the secondary. In this game the front seven is going to need to be strong.
On the other side of this matchup is San Diego State who hope to build on what they were able to do last season. The Aztecs finished with a 12-2 record and that included a win over UTSA in the Miami Beach Bowl. San Diego State always seems to have a strong running game, but the passing has been an issue. The Aztecs did get a big addition this offseason in former Virginia Tech quarterback Braxton Burmeister. Last season he completed 142 of his 255 passes for 1,960 yards, 14 touchdowns, and four interceptions. The top running back is Chase Bell and he rushed for 341 yards and four touchdowns.
Arizona is 0-4 against the spread in their last four games against the Mountain West. San Diego State is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games against the Pac-12. The over is 6-0 in Arizona’s last six games against the Mountain West. The over is 4-0 in San Diego State’s last four non-conference games.
This is a game where it feels like it could go either way because there are questions at quarterbacks for both teams, and how they will perform with this new team. The Aztecs are still the run-first team, and they are going to try and control the tempo with that. I don’t expect a whole lot of offense here and this game is going to stay under the total.
