The Vanderbilt Commodores and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors face off on Saturday in a Week 0 college football showdown at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
It was another disappointing season last season for the Commodores who finished with a 2-10 record, but head coach Clark Lea knows it could be a slow process to turn around the season. Even though Vanderbilt only had two wins last season, towards the end of the year they at least looked more competitive in the SEC, and the hope is that they can build on that for this season. Back for Vanderbilt is quarterback Ken Seals who threw for 1200 yards, five touchdowns, and eight interceptions last season. On defense ,Anfernee Orji led the team in tackles and he is going to be leaned on heavily again this season.
On the other side of this matchup is the Rainbow Warriors who went through a lot this offseason after finishing last year with a 6-7 record. Todd Graham was accused of mistreating players and stepped down in January. The team brought in Tommy Chang to be the head coach, but he lost a ton of key players off last years team. Gone is starting quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, top receiver Nick Mardner, and star running back Dae Dae Hunter. The defense also lost a few key defensive players. Hawaii this season has a ton of question marks after all the transfer-outs, and they have only six starters back from last season. Coach Chang has made it clear that he wants this to get back to the high-flying offenses of the past, so even with limited talent, look for the offense to try and air ot out.
Vanderbilt is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games. Hawaii is 3-1-1 against the spread in their last five home games. The under is 5-1 in the Commodores last six road games. The over is 4-1 in Hawaii’s last five games in August.
I think this Hawaii team is going to be fine, but it’s going to take a while for the young guys to get up to speed. This Hawaii offense is going to struggle to move the ball here, and I expect Ken Seals is going to have a big game under center for Vanderbilt. Look for Seals to not have any turnovers in that game, and Vanderbilt will secure the victory. Back Vanderbilt to cover the spread.
