The Nebraska Cornhuskers and Northwestern Wildcats face off on Saturday in a Week 0 college football showdown at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ohio. When these two teams faced off in October of 2021 it was Nebraska that secured the 56-7 victory.
The Cornhuskers finished last season with a 3-9 record overall but there is still a lot of hope that they can finally turn around the program with Scott Frost in charge. There were some big changes this offseason for the Conrhuskers, and the biggest one is at quarterback. Gone is Adrian Martinez and in is Casey Thompson who transferred in from Texas. Last season with the Longhorns, Thompson threw for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns. If Thompson can have a big season, this could be a special season in Lincoln. On defense, Nebraska is sold up front, but there are some questions in the secondary that need to be answered.
On the other side of this matchup is Northwestern who also finished last season with only three wins, but they have even more questions heading into the season. Under center this season for Northwestern is expected to be Ryan Hilinski and last season he had some struggles. He finished the year throwing for four touchdowns and three interceptions. When Northwestern has been good, it’s been the defense that has been impressive for Pat Fitzgerald, but there are some concerns about how they will perform this year. With the Wildcats struggles moving the ball, the defense is going to need to be good against the Cornhuskers offense.
Northwestern is 1-5 against the spread in their last six games overall. Nebraska is 14-5-2 against the spread in their last 21 games on grass. Nebraska is 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five games against Northwestern. The favorite is 4-1-1 against the spread in the last six meetings between the two teams.
I'm not sure that Nebraksa is going to have a big season, but I expect they are going to have no issue winning this game in blowout fashion. Hilinski isn’t the answer for Northwestern this season, and he is going to have issues leading to the Wildcats to score even ten points. Nebraska is going to get a big game from Casey Thompson, and the Cornhuskers will cover the spread.
