The West Virginia Mountaineers and Minnesota Golden Gophers face off on Tuesday in a college football showdown at Chase Field. This is the first meeting ever between the two teams. These are two teams who hope they are about to turn the corner to compete for conference titles.
West Virginia comes into this game with a 6-6 record and they have gone 6-6 against the spread. As an underdog this season they have gone 2-4 straight up. The last game for West Virginia came against Kansas, and although they didn’t look good in the last game they were able to win by six points. The Mountaineers are averaging 26.8 points while their defense is giving up 24.3 points per game. Jarret Doege has been the best player for West Virginia averaging 2.098 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. In this game, if they want a chance to win their rush defense is going to need to be strong.
On the other side of this matchup is the Minnesota Golden Gophers who sit with an 8-4 record and they have gone 7-4-1 against the spread. The Gophers have won two games in a row including the last game against the Wisconsin Badgers. The Gophers are averaging 26.08 points while their defense is giving up 18.3 points per game. The Gophers are a run first team that is averaging almost 200 yards per game. Ky Thomas and Mar’Keise Irving started the season lower on the depth chart, but because of injury they have been quite the 1-2 punch. This is a Gophers team that seems pretty healthy heading into this game.
Minnesota is 5-0 against the spread in their last five games in December. The under is 6-0 in Minnesota’s last six games in December. The under is 6-1 in the Mountaineers last seven games in December.
I expect both offenses are going to struggle to move the ball and with the Gophers liking to burn the clock, that is going to lead to this game being lower scoring. It’s a lean with Minnesota to cover the spread, but the play is with the under.
