The Appalachian State Mountaineers will travel to Cajun Field to take on the 24th ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns this Saturday afternoon in the Sun Belt Championship.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers finished their regular season with an overall record of 10-2 and advanced to the Sun Belt Championship after finished conference play in the Sun Belt – East Division with a 7-1 record. Appalachian State was strong throughout the season with their only losses coming at Miami & Louisiana and finished the season strong winning their last 6 games which included a 27-3 victory over Georgia Southern this past weekend.

On the season, Appalachian State is averaging 35.8 ppg on 439.9 total yards per game (250.8 passing yds/g; 189.1 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Appalachian State has been led by the RB duo of Nate Noel (184 att, 1034 yards, 4 TD) & Camerun Peoples (145 att, 764 yards, 13 TD). QB Chase Brice has completed 63.8% of his passes for 2901 yards, 22 TD, & 10 INT. The top receiving threats for the Mountaineers have been Corey Sutton (59 rec, 876 yards, 7 TD), Malik Williams (49 rec, 776 yards, 6 TD), & Thomas Hennigan (49 rec, 705 yards, 5 TD).

Defensively, Appalachian State is holding their opponents to an average of 18.9 ppg on 319.8 total yards per game (206.3 passing yds/g; 113.4 rushing yds/g).

The 24th ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns finished their season with an overall record of 11-1 and had no trouble earning a bid to the Sun Belt Conference Championship after going a perfect 8-0 in the Sun Belt West Division. Louisiana started their season with a 38-18 loss at Texas, however, the Ragin’s Cajuns were dominant the rest of the season which included 28-point victories over Appalachian State & Liberty.

On the season, Louisiana is averaging 31.3 ppg on 406.6 total yards per game (214.3 passing yds/g; 192.3 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Louisiana has been led by the RB duo of Chris Smith (144 att, 835 yards, 8 TD) & Montrell Johnson (135 att, 776 yards, 11 TD). QB Levi Lewis has completed 61.4% of his passes for 2436 yards, 18 TD, & 4 INT while also rushing for 4 TD. The top receiving threats for the Ragin’ Cajuns have been Peter LeBlanc (33 rec, 350 yards, TD), Michael Jefferson (13 rec, 332 yards, 3 TD), Kyren Lacy (21 rec, 295 yards, 5 TD), & Neal Johnson (22 rec, 287 yards, TD).

Defensively, Louisiana is holding their opponents to an average of 18.5 ppg on 349.7 total yards per game (205.8 passing yds/g; 143.8 rushing yds/g).

The Mountaineers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games, however, are just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Ragin’s Cajuns are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning record.

Appalachian State has been great down the stretch, especially on the defensive end, as the Mountaineers have help opponents to just an average of 7.8 ppg, however, this is still a team that had no answers for the Louisiana rushing attack in their earlier meeting this season as the Ragin’ Cajuns rushed for 246 yards & 5 TD’s against the Mountaineers. Appalachian State will be fully healthy for this game as they didn’t have Camerun Peoples in their first matchup, however, it’s still hard to think that the Mountaineers are going to have a bunch of offense success on the road against a Louisiana defense that ranks 13th in scoring defense. Louisiana will still have head coach Billy Napier for this matchup, despite him recently accepting the head coaching job at Florida, and as I expect the Ragin’ Cajuns to have success once again against Appalachian State at home, I think the play here is to take the Ragin’ Cajuns and the points. Good Luck!
